Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's tire time.

My rear tire (Vittoria Diamante Pro) is pretty square and worn after only 1700 miles. The thread is showing in three places from my stupid panic stops (I swear my town is trying to kill me-3 close calls in 3 days). Yesterday I had a piece of glass go through it. I kind of want a set to race with, but I don't have the money to buy a training set and a race set. I was looking at race tires, like the GP 4000s or Michelin Pro Race 3 and they appealed to me, but I wanted a longer life than just 1700 miles. Any great suggestions?

the gp4ks are good at everything, not just racing. i've gotten deep into the high 2k range on a rear tire.

I hope you didn't miss the boat. This was posted a few days ago. Great deal if it is still available.

My current set of GP4000s have more than 1,500 miles on them and still plenty of meat left on the rear. One nice thing about the Contis is that they have a couple of wear indicators cast into them, so you don't have to wait until the cord shows to know when they're about due for replacement.

I've put 1600 mi on a set of GP4s since May and still have lots of tread left. I don't know how they would handle skid stops though

These are truly great tires! I really think you can run them way past the wear indicators without too much worry. They do seem to cut and flat easier at that point, but they're still quite serviceable. Mine usually end up with a fatal cut before I wear the tread completely down to the cords. I had one that lasted almost 3000 miles, but most go 2000 easily.
