Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You really need to plan out your ride. I don't think I can just go out and "get lost" to get 100 miles

I never plan mine. However, I have quite a few routes stored in my head. Randomly connecting them is part of the fun.

I can't remember the last time I "planned" a century. I just plan to ride, sometimes I ride a century.

I don't know how you do that solo without an iPod.

hey..it's food related, and my post's are always food related so it's all good. sooo. where to go. i have been to a lot of mexican restaurants, but it's hard to try them all in SD because their are so many. but if i had to chose one it would be https://www.ortegasbistro.com/ great location as well. hillcrest is a very lively place on the weekends, one of my favorite communities in SD. i dont know how "authentic" it is, but its sooo gooood. guac and carne are great their.

*edit. it looks like they have one in OB also https://www.yelp.com/biz/ortegas-san-diego but i still like the hillcrest one better because of the environment.

are you bringing the bike?

Map out a century with a goal or at least some interesting scenery. Never look at your mileage or speed, switch your Garmin screen to map mode. A good first century for you would be the Amtrak in September, Irvine to San Diego.

You must have better mexican catering trucks than here. They tend to make me sick.

Centuries are overrated. I'll take a 30 mile hard ride over a century any day. I'm bored in the saddle usually by mile 60. By mile 75 I better be off the damn bike beer in hand.

Yeah, the farthest I've ridden solo is 50 miles. At least with familiar surrounds, I had nothing to look at except for my computer and I dont own a mp3 player

i have been thinking about routs for you to do while you are down here. torrey pines is a must but this rout really grabbed my attention. it takes you through some of the poorer san diego communities, lincoln, chula, national city and then all of a sudden you are in one of the most wealthiest ares in coronado. on the way into the strand i took a really stupid rout on a busy street and on the way back i found that the strand bike path goes all the way to harbor drive, it's a really cool ride actually. when are you coming down again? i have been wanting to take a saturday off work and this might be a good time to do it!

Dude.

Don't sweat it.

Sixty miles on a bike is way more than the Average American could even dream of doing. The Average American is obese, flabby, and it's all he can do to walk to the car to drive to the Golden Arches for another fix of junque food.

You're in the top ten percent of the population.

With all this enabling support on BF, dude, you're never going to complete one.

Not to be a contrarian, but I say that if you're serious about doing a C, forget the photography, forget the food, focus on the mission, and H The FU

photos were mainly at intersections or while riding. but i agree, if you look at my stats chart, my total time not riding was one hour!

edit: and yea, i am VERY surprised at all this support, kind words, sympathy and encouragement! where is all the "HTFU pansy" comments!? i mean, thats what i was really looking for when i started this. where is the old BF!!!!???

Really. A kinder, gentler BF. Who the F wants that?

I hear you, man. I mean if we can't come here for abuse, we're going to have to get it the old fashioned way--at home.

I can't believe that your thread is still open. The only acceptable answer to why you rode less than 100 miles on any day is either:
"it was a recovery ride"
or
"i'm tapering to peak for a more important ride in a week"

HTFU

I've ridden a lot of centuries, almost always in organized events or rallies. These events give you plenty of incentive to go on and finish. I've ridden a few in training when I was younger.

All of my other riding involves planned routes. I usually know how far I'm going and where I'm going before I leave. Sometimes I will cut the ride short but usually I complete the planned route. In the past I had more friends to ride with and it helps to complete a route when you are with other people. When I'm trying to do long rides for training I have some of my old routes that give me a lot of miles. I'm older now and haven't tried those routes in quite awhile.
