Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

build mountain bike or buy road bike stuff?

I have a Gary fisher mtb in my size I got for cheap that needs wheels and some stuff. I have no idea if I like mountain biking or not. Should I build it up, or just sell it all and buy new/more speeds road wheels or another vintage road bike?

Since you have a road bike, that should be the only bike on the road.

As for the mountain bike, If you have plenty good MTB paths or trails around your area, and you want to try it, then it's up to you if you want to keep it.

As for me, I don't have a lot of places to mountain bike, plus I'm scared of biking off-road even in a MTB.

oh yeah, whatever that second option was that didn't have anything to do with MTBs
that's the correct choice

There are trails here, and the mtb will be offroad only.

Build it up...you can't have too many bikes nor different types of bikes for that matter.

I would build it up. Off road riding is great for building bike handling skills. It will work some other muscle groups and the intensity levels are different.

Try it. You can sell a complete bike easier than just a frame probably anyway if you don't like it.

Building a mountain bike from the frame up can be fun
Here's my 92 Nishiki Ariel frame up build. Most of the parts came off of donor bikes from my flipper collection.

Thanks for the encouraging advice from a road cyclists perspective. I guess I will give it a shot!

If you have everything you need and want for your road bike, go ahead and go the mtb route. This however would never be the case for me, there's too much I still need and want for my road bike.

Of course there are things I would like for my road bike, but since I'm not racing it doesn't matter. That said, I wouldn't mind building a bike for racing, which I could start on with the mtb funds. On the other hand I might like mountain biking, and if nothing else I can ride it in the winter. Tough call, but I'm leaning towards trying something new since I live in the northwest and there are lots of places to use the mtb.

It's a fun ride - 1x9. More beastly than a cyclo, more sleek than a MTB, a road bike that can go anywhere. If the OP were to build a MTB, this is the way to do it.

The inner ring is for when I go off a curb or trail and drop the chain. There is no FD.
