Why did my brifter break?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why did my brifter break?

A few weeks ago my rear shifter cable broke inside the brifter so I took it into the LBS. They got it fixed, but said it was really hard to find the cable end and get it out.

Today I did a quick check of my brakes before a ride and ping goes the brake lever and it is stuck tight. LBS says the brifter is shot and needs replacement - it's a Shimano 105. What's weird is that I hardly ever use the rear brake.

Is it possible that the work on the shifter cable damaged the brifter somehow?

I don't know, but if it's less than two years old, it's covered by Shimano's excellent warranty. My FD shifter let go recently and I sent it in to Shimano and they sent me a new replacement. If the LBS gives you any grief, screw 'em.

i don't know an awful lot about the insides of STI's but i was told by a spanner monkey that 105 shifters have a part in them made out of plastic that has a tendency to go bang, whereas the same part in the ultegra shifters is made of metal so doesn't tend to go bang.

I had the EXACT thing happen to my dura ace 7800 lever, cable break and all, and Shimano replaced my shifter for free. Ask the shop people really nicely, and bring them a 6-pack of some sort of IPA. Bike mechanics love IPAs.

I was adjusting my rear derailleur earlier this week and all of the sudden it stopped shifting at all. I simply could not figure out what was going on, or what I did. After about 2 hours of messing with stuff, I finally decided I'd man up and go to the LBS. Turns out the Shimano 105 shifter had stopped ratcheting, so wouldn't shift, or even move to the correct position to figure out internally what might be the cause. The LBS called up Shimano and had it replaced under warranty by the end of the day. Gotta love the LBS sometimes!

A brifter is a combination brake/shift lever. If I recall correctly, the term was coined by Shimano when they presented the first such device on the market.

I think it's an unfortunate term coined by some journalist trying to come up with a cute name for an STI shifter. Sounds like something you'd have for breakfast with a cup if the old chai. "Ave another brifter, Luv?"

No thanks.

Followed up with the mechanic today and it looks like the "cable hook unit" blew apart. Appears to be a fairly simple fix so I'm happy about that. Wonder why it happened, though. And do I have tha same problem lurking in the other side.
