How many can do a 40K in 1 hr.?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After being off the bike for a number of years and gaining 40+ lbs. I have set a goal to do a 40K TT in under 1 hour by May of next year. The last time I attempted it was nearly 15 years ago and did it in around a 1:04. I did not train seriously much but rode almost every day as a bike messenger. My conditioning is improving and the weight is slowly coming off but how likey is reaching that goal?

I can pretty much ride all day at 18.5 mph but if I pick up the pace to over 20 mph I tend to tire quickly. I did a short 5K tt in 8:28 recently so I know I have a way to go. I went to Analytic Cycling and put in some numbers and if I come down from 225 to 185 lbs. I should take off about 1/2 min. from that time. So it seems doable especially if my fitness improves as well. I just turned 40 this year so this is one of those I can still do it kind of things.

That's my goal as well. I've been doing a lot of research on time trials and the more I learn the more I realize that this won't be easy for me. I'm 45 and haven't been doing a lot of volume or intensity for the last few years. I'm going to spend the winter building a base before starting intervals and time trial efforts at lactate threshold for sets of 15 minutes. I bought Totally Time Trial, one of the spinerval dvds and I bought a Christ Carmichael dvd on time trials. I can sustain about 250 watts for an hour now but I need to do around 330 watts. I have friends my age and older who can easily ride below an hour so I'm hopeful, but there are so many variables. Assuming you have the fitness and a good bike set up, you still may lack the focus to be able to hammer all out for an hour. We'll see. Good luck.

I've only ever done a 40K TT as part of an oly-distance tri. My posted time was 1:10 but I think that may have included one or both transitions. Breaking an hour is flying.

Wind resistants and power required increases faster than speed. Way easy to ride at 18-20, toughern hell to ride at 24 MPH. That said here in wisconsin we have a good citizen race series called wisport. We have a 52 yr national champ that rides these races. Can't sprint so finnishes in first pac in RR but wins all time trials at about 27 MPH fully documented on WISPORT.org. Gordon is first name.

Did a 57.20 40K back in 1993 on a dead-flat course at the ripe old age of 38. Had clip-on bars on my standard road bike with Roval wheels (anybody remember them???). I did not practice a shorter timetrials ahead of time (highly advised that you do) and my inner thighs hurt so bad afterwards I could not walk or sit for hours. Have not tried it agains since except as a TTT and that sucked as we lost one guy in the first 5 miles and a second guy sucked.

The Alabama state Time Trial Championship is on a flat course that is 40K (20k out/20k back). The course record is 53:12 by olympic cyclist Jim Copeland (wasn't he also on LA Sheriff team?). I've never done a TT farther than 15K, but your challenge interests me.

40km = 25miles

This is a standard TT distance in the Uk. My best for this distance is 1:05:35 done on what is classed as a sporting course. reckon that with a TT bike I could beat the hour. so I don't think that you are asking too much.

Anybody know of any Time trials coming up ing the Northern California area? The only ones I can find seem to be in SoCal. Right now I can barley average 22mph over a 30 mile slightly rolling course on the hoods. Somewhere in my garage I've got some clip-ons but I have a hard time beliving it would increase my speed 2mph.

If you're talking about USCF-sanctioned TTs then you're too late. The Esparto TT (Districts) was August 29th. There won't be any more until next year.

Tomorrow morning 9am I am doing my first road race. A mass start TT. 24.5 miles uphill with an ele. climb of 4169 ft. Prize money offered for 1st place time under 1:20. I'm going for the money. And oh it's going to hurt.
