Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Gearshift problems.. or chain..

Every time I ride my road bike, the gearshift switch automatically. It is frustrating because it keeps doing that.

How to fix this problem?

Also, I don't know much about road bicycle, but should I clean my bicycle with water?
even the chain? It's very dirty.. ;|

Thank you, I would appreciated if I receive any help.

Take it to a local shop and ask. There are several possibilities. Chain needs replacing. OR Chain AND cassette need replacing. OR Rear derailleur needs adjusting. OR Bent rear derailleur hanger. other. Or some combination.

Read this article at practice. https://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=64

What kind of bike do you have? Components?

If that doesn't solve it above, it could be a bent hanger or old chain/cassette.

As for cleaning your bike, soap and water works. Some people use Pledge to get a nice shine. I like to use Simple Green because it's cheap and can be used on anything. As for the chain, you're only suppose to wipe it down, maybe use a toothbrush to clean debris. You shouldn't ever take it apart and degrease it though. All I usually do is lube my chain, and wipe off the excess.

If you have an older bike with shifters on the down tube or stem (Non "indexing") then the little screw or wingnut on the side of the shifter might be a little loose. Tighten it up a bit.

You can clean your bike (frame, bars, wheels, seat ...) with warm, soapy water. But for the chain, spray on some chainlube, then wipe off the extra with a rag. You can use a few drops of chainlube on the derailleur pivot points, and any other moving parts. Just keep it off the brake pads & rims or you'll have no brakes.

Perhaps an over-eager troll ?

Put the chain on the outer chainring. In the front center of the chainring, pull the chain forward. If you can see one whole tooth of the chainring, get a new chain.

The misshifting I experienced for two months turned out to be caused by a worn out chain. This chain caused both my cassette and my middle chainring to wear out as well. Having it all fixed costs too much, make sure you get your chain swapped about every 5000km.

Had the same problem on a Windsor Tourist from BD. Discovered the der hanger was very slightly bent and used the old screwdriver-in-the-bolt-hole adjustment to get it right. Perfect shifting now.

I have a CAAD9 that I bought three weeks ago. I have put 300 miles on it and I get that same " auto" shifting as well. It's very annoying. I'm going to have the bike shop tune up the bike this coming week anyway so I guess we'll see what it is.

Start with a thorough chain cleaning. Get one of those Park Tools kits and you'll be happy.
