Chain: Dropped then bent, or bent then dropped?
The facts are these:
- I shifted from my big ring to my small ring
- Heard a noise
- Looked down to see the chain on the inside of the small ring and partly on the outside of the big ring
- Stopped, right away (no pedaling). Got off the bike, shifted and pedaled a bit (with no extreme force) and got things back to normal
- As soon as I started back up things got all wonky
As you can see from the evidence, that link right in the middle clearly got its panties in a twist over something.
So I'm wondering, do you think it was a run-of-the-mill dropped chain that just went horribly wrong, or did the chain get screwed up somehow and cause the dropped chain? I really can't figure out how shifting from the big to small ring would result in the chain ending up outside the rings, but I also can't imagine the chain just getting twisted on it's own...
Haven't inspected the gears any further yet, but I doubt there's any damage aside from the chain, and I've already ordered a new one. So really just kind of wondering what happened because I'm curious.

Not quite sure, but I do know you could have shifted back down to small ring and pedaled the chain back on if it happens again. Also, that is a really dirty chain...I degrease and lube mine about once every two weeks. I just buy a aerosol degreaser and some chain lube and go link by link, wiping spillage and grime with a towel.

This happened to me once from a mis-shift on the front. It jumped off the rings, I tried to pedal it back on while finessing the deraileur and bent the chain.
You can use your chain tool to remove the bent part and hold it together with a KMC missing link.

Wasn't pedaling too hard, certainly not hard enough where I would even remotely expect a drop. I don't remember pedaling backwards, but I wouldn't doubt I did it instinctively; I'm probably over-estimating how much torsion the chain could withstand in my head when telling myself "there's no way you pedaled hard enough to bend it."
p.s. the chain was a lot cleaner when I left; there are a couple really sketchball roads on this route (that I'd never tried before) with lots of cruft.

They say it doesn't matter nowadays, but I prefer not to shift under force.
