My 2009 Cannondale CAAD9-? is done.

I just slapped on a set of 2011 Mavic Ksyrium Elites. Unbelievable.
Now I "understand" what is meant by "stiff rims" and how important they are performance-wise.
The entire bike in general is a tight and responsive machine. A CAAD9 NEEDS to be built
up for one to be able to fully appreciate the excellence in the construction of this frame.
There is a reason that this particular frame is so loved. There may be stiffer aluminum
bikes out there or more comfort oriented aluminum bikes, but the CAAD (IMO) seems to
offer the best of all worlds without giving much away in any area. It's a 90% bike in all
fields (stiffness, comfort, weight, etc...) where the others might rate higher in stiffness,
but fall below in comfort or vice versa (or they might weigh significantly more, etc...).

I have to get my arse on a CAAD10 just to see how much better it's evolved over the CAAD9.
I'm glad I got my hands on one of the legends and in the color I wanted it in (BBQ).
I'm going to ride the hell out of this female dog and enjoy every mile.
It's literally a different bike with the best I could afford to put on her.

And as I took her out of my LBS, guys who rolled on $12,000. top-of-the-echelon bikes got wood for my build.

I'm really going to have to spend a grip of money to be able to do significantly better than this bike.
Holy crap...and on top of all that, she's "my" definition of beautiful! I was trying to blacken her out
as much as possible, but the Ksyriums tied all the silver on the bike together. It's tastefully done (IMO).
I'm in love fellas. I rode her today and she was frigin' off-the-hook! Heavy rain tomorrow, but 70's for Friday.

    Enjoy...

I dig it! But I have to plead ignorance on one thing: why is the color called BBQ?

    Thanks.

And BBQ is the Matte Black finish for some Cannondale road and mountain bikes.

Thanks! She's at 16.3lbs right now.
Could've been down to 15.8lbs, but I couldn't say no to the Ksyriums.

    Thank you FM.

I didn't get the DA crankset for a few reasons.
It cost much more than what I paid for my Ultegra SL.
I didn't like it's looks. The weight savings were minimal.
Plus, the Ultega SL crankset is stiffer than the Dura-Ace 7800.

But, when I found out I could swap chainrings, I knew I'd make a hybrid of the two.
And there you have my Ultegra SL/Dura-Ace 7800 crankset. Best of both worlds.
The shifting "is" improved. It wasn't as huge a difference as when I went from the
OEM FSA Vero crank to the Ultegra, but it's enough to be a noticeable improvement.

Now, the Dura-Ace 7900 crankset, that would've been better for this set-up aesthetically
speaking with a 114 gram difference, but there would be compatibility issues.

It looks like a Grill - or as those up north call, a barbecue grill - would be my guess.

What I've learned from upgrading my bike...you don't know how good a CAAD could be until you have the right bits on it.

This bike is kicking my arse. It climbs so much better. It accelerates much faster. It brakes harder. It is easier to get up to speed.
Whoever said that upgrading a bike doesn't make much of a difference doesn't know wtf they are talking about.
The right upgrades on the right bike is a like unleashing your frameset.
I thought that spending $3,500. on my CAAD was going to be a waste especially
when one considers how many great bikes can be purchased for that amount of money.
But when I see what I ended up with, it was definitely worth the time and effort it took.
It's my own unique bike, custom tailored to my needs and to my wants.

When I first had my Dura Ace 7800 groupset installed,
it wasn't as smooth as the Tiagra/Sora group it replaced.
Of course, I hadn't taken into account that it had to be broken in first.
A couple of new upgrades (the Dura Ace 7800 chainrings) extended my break in time.
I just had it tweaked and fine-tuned, had the stretched cables adjusted and wow.
It's shifting amazingly better and it's as smooth as buttah. Dura Ace 7800 deserves it's reputation.

For me? Yes! It was worth it. If it wasn't for the downpour we just got, I wouldn't be here typing this.
But I wanted to somehow keep that euphoria of today's ride going even if I could just stretch it a little more.
I can't wait to hit the road tomorrow. The bike is performing like a thoroughbred. This is going to be the bike I train on.
I thought I was going to be in a rush to build another bike (probably carbon), but know what? Nahhh. I'll roll with this.

    "This" is good.

Is it possible that a bike could be so good that it makes you want to ride more?
I mean damn! Hills I used to hate, I now look forward to. It actually feels "good" to climb them.

    Thanks.

Yeah, that OEM silver tape was horrible.
The OEM Selle saddle wasn't as bad as the Bontrager Race Basic on my Trek, but the Fizik is so much better.
And, the Fizik Microtex bar tape and Fizik Gel pads were one of the upgrades that made the biggest differences in my ride.

    Update:

I've gotten her to where I want her.
There's nothing else I can do to this bike for my needs.
The final upgrade was a set or KCNC Ti Skewers.
It's been a trying experience, it's been frustrating, it's been fun.

    Final Cost: $3,500.
    Weight: 16.57 lbs

I could go (and probably will) with a Yumeya chainring to bring back it's SL Crankset look and be better than the 7800 ring.
Wheels wise: Zipp 404's (at least) just to see what all the "aero" talk is about, but other than that, IMO, she's complete.

    Better pic on the way.

That is indeed a beautiful CAAD. I have watched your build pictures unfold for a while now, and I just love the BBQ color and what you've done with that bike. I couldn't agree more that they are indeed awesome bikes.

Upgrade? If you really want to upgrade what you're riding now, you will require two (2) things: they are (1) a huge wad of cash; and (2) the ability to walk into you lbs and say "pinnerrello dogma please"

    Thanks RD.

I love the double takes it gets from riders who know bikes and who have rigs costing way more. I'll definitely have to spend about twice as much as I have to notice a worthy difference. That's why the next bike (as of now) for me will be a SuperSix EVO Red. The CAAD I built up to ride hard without fear. Again, I'll post some better pics tomorrow.

I'm going to ride a tone of different bikes when I make my big purchase towards the end of the year, but I'm strongly leaning towards the EVO Red. If it is all it's hyped-up to be, it might just be my perfect "keeper" bike. I don't want to buy an expensive rig only to lust after something else next year. I'll always lust, duh?, but like the purchase I made in this particular CAAD, I want my big purchase to be something I've researched well and have come to a conclusion on. The EVO will have to prove itself to me capable of carrying a 200lb rider. I'm sweatin' the BB30 issues. I'm going to wait a bit before I plunk down my easy earned cash.

Anyway, if I get the right sun out today, I'll post the pics I've been promising of the CAAD in it's current glory (trust me, none of my previous pictures do it justice right now! )

2ndGen, do you remember how much your bike weighed stock? I've got a 09 CAAD9-6 with full Tiagra groupset (except for the brakes) and mine is at about 19.4 lbs. I only have swapped out the handlebars, stem, seatpost and seat. I'm hoping to get mine down to around 17 lbs but since I'm on a student budget... it ain't easy.

    20.10lbs

Wheelset with tires/tubs will give you an easy 2lb+ drop for between $500-$600.
