Importing a framset to USA - duties charged?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Importing a framset to USA - duties charged?

If you buy a new frameset from an overseas seller are there import duties charged on the transaction?

Any info or where to find the answer would be appreciated.

I went through a US distributor for my Pegoretti and I didn't see any specific import duty on the frameset. However, it was probably buried in the price.

look up the harmonized tariff schedule. i believe it's 10% on most bike components, should you get caught by customs, that is. same goes for wheels, etc

I ordered an Eddy Merckx MX Leader frame from the company's distributor in South Africa. I think I had to pay a $35 customs fee. However, I had to pick it up at the airport, and go through paperwork at the customs office first.

$35 would be quite doable but 10% almost makes it a deal breaker. Airport is pretty close so not an issue.

I have looked at the harmonized tariff schedule. There is nothing in the thousands of pages that is harmonized. Totally depends on how the shipper classifies the item.

Most times you won't, but a lot has to do with how it is shipped. I bought a frame from a store in the UK. It was shipped insured in a simple box and nothing was charged. I have also bought wheels with the same results.
Neither time it was shipped as a frame for sale and such.

+1 The shipper should know what needs to be done to get through customs with the minimal fuss. An old work buddy sold wake boards and got them in country by classifying them as boat parts since a boat was required. No duties. That's what he said at least. GL

My Chinese frame and fork got through without any duty. On the customs declaration the frame was listed as "bike part" with a value of $35.
I don't know the legality of misrepresenting products on customs declarations. I got an order from ribble that was listed as a professional samples with no value. It was 6 tires.

I just went through this. I bought a frame from Pro Bike Kit, which ships using USPS in the states. USPS, however, does not enforce the duty (which, I believe, is about 3.7%) and just delivers the frame without collecting anything.

One frame set will probably go through without inspection, especially if shipped by EMS or marked as sample on the shipping docs. If they inspect the box, you will be in the 10% range. You might need to argue with customs over the classification to get the lowest rate.

I ordered a $600 Cinelli frame off PBK a few months ago, never saw for anything like a tax or fee. Just got the pink notice in the mailbox and picked it up from the post office.

Perhaps there is a minimum value where you have to pay the tax, like $1K or $2K.
