Forbes On "The World's Most Expensive Bikes"
Hey all,
I'm the Forbes reporter that posted a thread a few weeks ago asking for thoughts and suggestions regarding the world's most expensive bikes. Many of you had great ideas, and I did my best to follow your leads.
Here's the published story:
https://www.forbes.com/2010/07/08/tou...ign-bikes.html
I'll be interested to hear your thoughts. And let me know if there are any ultra-pricey bikes that I missed.
Thanks again for your help,
Andy Greenberg

If you didn't have my team mate Alan's IF Carbon Fiber bike with the Lightweight tubie race wheels and the SRM, you missed the boat.

Um, you got the price of Di2 WAAAAY off. It does NOT sell for $5000, but for $3000. And at some online stores (e.g. ProBikeKit where it's $2500) you can get it for under $3000. That's a huge difference in price from $5000.

The article was pretty cool; the Parlee in the gallery though was an ironic selection for what a "custom" bike looks like. A whole fistful of spacers, a tiny stem and an angled down slammed back saddle. I would have much preferred a picture of this parlee I suppose:

When one of them decides to do the high end thing, they'll go to their LBS and take whatever he gives them, spacers and all. And they'll be happy, all except for that 1 out of 10 who'll happen upon BF and become an annoying noodge like us.

Most of the readers of this forum, myself included, could not afford the bikes in your article. Many of the readers of Forbes could buy those bikes with their lunch money. Maybe I should spend less time reading Bike Forums and more time reading Forbes.
Excellent article Andy.

Link is all the way at the end of the article, but you can find a slide show of some of the bikes mentioned here:

If its a fashion statement, would a buyer really want a knockoff of someone elses engineering? Would you want a Rolex look a like but with maybe more diamonds for that extra sparkle?

I enjoyed the article but I have mixed feelings about the impression it gives. It seems like the article is saying that spending a lot of money on a bike is always a symptom of conspicuous consumption.
To me, there's a line between "expensive bikes that are expensive because some idiot stuck a bunch of gold leaf/crystals/butterflys/whatever to it" and "expensive bikes that are expensive because they're custom designed/involve complex engineering/are difficult to make/use expensive materials". The most expensive bikes listed in the article are mostly objects of conspicuous consumption or art. Bikes like that appeal on the basis of conspicuous consumption or art, not as functioning workout/transportation devices. People who like riding and enjoy owning/drooling over well engineered, functional bikes that offer bleeding-edge performance (like most of the people here) probably couldn't care less about things like the "butterfly bike" but love the ~$20K+ Storck Aero2. I'd argue spending a lot of money on a Stork Aero2 is much more "legitimate" than spending a lot of money on a gold-plated Dahon folder. But that's just me.

Here's another bike for only $50,000
I'm also in this line of thinking. To be perfectly honest, anyone who buys a performance machine that has rocks (or animal parts) glued to it or has an extra layer of metal applied is a nincompoop. Some of the pics made me smile (particularly the Spyker which has the seat adjusted in a totally ball busting position).
