Buying my 1st clipless pedals and shoes
Hi guys I've been road biking for a few months now, I feel it's time to go clipless. My purchase will most likely me made @ performancebike.com, what would you guys recommend? and what are the differences? I ask because I see(spd-sl etc)
Also do they each require their own different shoe? plan on buying online, having LBS install and choosing shoes there since I hear it's very critical to do so

road shoes are going to have the triangle bolt pattern, while mountain are going to have a spd. Look uses the triangle pattern and make very good pedals and cleats. Speedplay are another big name in the market and everybody who rides their pedal say they are the best in the market(whether its look or speedplay). Speedplays come with an adapter to fit it to road shoes (triangle pattern).

Also look at Performance's little brother they bought up - Nashbar. When it comes to shoes and pedals, sometimes Nashbar is hard to beat for selection and price.
As answered, if you are getting road shoes and road pedals, then it doesn't matter which brand shoe or pedal. They all have succumbed to the LOOK 3-hole pattern to thankfully have at least one semi-universal standard in the industry.
Oh, I reread you post, you are getting the shoes at the shop. Ok, well that gives you the good advantage of trying them on to find brand/size you like. If you really are going to have the shop put on the cleats, then I highly suggest having the pedals on your bike first and the cleats in a bag. Just don't go into a shop with the pedals new in their box especially with the Performance inventory sticker on them.
Here is a nice shoe size comparison chart between the brands for a starting point.

I'd recommend shopping around online for the pedals. Performance's prices are good but not great. You can get the Shimano r540 for $45 @ Nashbar vs $60 at performance. I'd also check probikekit.com, you can probably get an even better deal there (and free shipping).
Edit: You can get the r540 from PBK for $46 - 15% off (PBK15 coupon) = $39 shipped.

Try some Mavic Avenir shoes (in 'go-fast' white of course) ... I bought some today. Super comfortable - especially if you have wide or high arch feet, made by Adidas apparently.

Fresh Garbage
I recenntly bought the 105 pedals instead of the Ultegras. The Ultegras aren't a lot lighter and they cost so much more, other than weight the two are the same thing.
with that discount maybe go with Ultegra. Eh, they seem too similar to spend the extra cash

They're easy to get in and out of, double-sided, light, easy to clean & service, have lots of comfy float, and the cleats can be recessed and are compatible with any 2-hole (SPD) shoe.

I went with this set for my first pair of road shoes and pedals. $79.98
https://www.pricepoint.com/detail/134...oad-Pedals.htm
I didn't want to go out and spend hundreds of dollars on
shoes without first knowing what I needed and liked.
With this combo, I got to learn how to clip in and out and
if I messed up, I wouldn't be destroying a pair of Sidis.
Now, I'm looking at a pair of Sidi Ergo II's. Can't wait!
The pedals only weigh 240g's and are made of magnesium.
I started out with this combo and now I'm ready to spend some more money on pedals
(going with Dura Ace 7800's) an the best shoes I can afford.

105's will be replaced far earlier than Ultegras.
New Ultegras are almost identical to 7800 Dura Aces (top of the line).
For the minor price difference, I'd definitely get the Ultegras.
Plus, pedals are one of those items you'll more likely than not transfer
from one bike to another along with saddles and possibly wheelsets.
