MONTARGIS, France — Defending Tour de France champion Alberto Contador paid a surprise visit to Lance Armstrong's team bus on Thursday to offer a watch commemorating last year's Tour success.
As riders prepared for Thursday's fifth stage from Epernay to Montargis, Contador climbed aboard the RadioShack bus carrying two small bags.
Contador's press officer, Jacinto Vidarte, told reporters that the Spanish rider handed over "commemorative watches from last year's Tour win for (Johan) Bruyneel and Lance Armstrong."
Bruyneel was manager of the 2009 Astana team, which counted Contador and Armstrong as its leading stars. While Contador won last year's Tour, Armstrong finished third.
Speaking after the stage, the 38-year-old Armstrong called Contador's gesture "very generous", adding that the Spaniard obviously "recognizes he had the support of a great team" in helping him win his second Tour.
Contador and the seven-time Tour winner Armstrong have since parted ways, with Armstrong moving to RadioShack, for whom Bruyneel is now team manager.
Asked why he visited the RadioShack bus, a smiling Contador said simply: "To say hello."
Armstrong and Contador had a tense relationship when they rode together last year, and the Texan was quick to dispel any talk that he and Contador could ride again together.
"I don't think that's in anybody's best interests," Armstrong said. "I don't think that's on the cards."
However, Armstrong insists his relationship with Contador is "fine" and that they have put their differences aside.
"Maybe for the people in front of the TV it looks a bit heated, but it's really not," Armstrong said. "There's a mutual level of respect for each other that we have there, despite what went on in the last 12 months.
"I think we're both sort of tired of the drama, and just looking forward to two weeks of seeing who is the best guy this year."
Some observes have tipped the 27-year-old Contador to match or even surpass Armstrong's seven Tour titles. Armstrong has won two more than any other rider, with Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Jacques Anquetil and Miguel Indurain all winning five.
"You can't take away the fact that he's probably the most talented guy to ever throw a leg over a bike ... I don't have a problem saying that," Armstrong said. "What we saw last year was extremely impressive on all levels - climbing, time-trialing, recovery, motivation, mental toughness."
