Time RXS pedal failure??

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Time RXS pedal failure??

Anyone ever have this happen? This happened to my wife today on her ride. Sprinting out of the saddle at speed...ouch!

Regrettably, that is the price we pay for our new and much faster cycles. What we have gained, we have also lost to a certain degree. At least she is one bad cat, and you should be proud she is your woman.

Ouch! Interesting failure, i been using the rxs for a while and the pedal is pretty reliable. I'm gonna start looking for cracks then.

At the beginning i thought the posting was about the axle coming out the pedal, that was the reason the pedal got recalled like 2 years ago. Never imagine it was due to material fatigue apparently. Hope your wife is ok...

She's a bit banged up...sprinting over 30mph.. luckily she didn't break anything besides her bike.. mega road rash though.

Very surprised to see the broken pedal! She's only 115lbs so I wouldn't expect her to break anything! Not bashing Time..I know light stuff can break, I was just wondering if this was a common issue that I should have known about, or if its isolated.

Thanks for the info!

I don't want to commit to anything, as the information is via internet, but that failure seems unacceptable for a 115 pound tough girl. Even though she is undoubtedly a super strong rider, that is too crucial of a part to have failed her.

Im 200 pounds and i been using the carbon rxs for at least 2 years and no problems. But im a sunday rider so i barely have used my pedals compared with your wife's.

This guy had the same problem twice but with the regular xrs, the regular xrs is made of a hard plastic resins thing, is this the same your wife was using right? Looks like the carbon version is ok. If i was you I would ask time you might get an iclic?

I had a pair of RXS Carbon pedals break at the tip after about a year and a half of use. It was nowhere as dramatic as the breakage your wife experienced. In fact, I was still able to use the pedals for a while until I switched to a pedal with a metal body (Shimano 105 SPD-SL). Seeing this picture makes me glad that I did. In fairness to Time, I will say that I had crashed on the pedals shortly after I switched over from Speedplay. I didn't see any damage at the time (no pun intended), but I wondered whether that contributed to the failure later. Had her pedal been crashed previously?

I'm glad that your wife wasn't hurt worse, and I hope that the road rash heals quickly!

There have been other reports of the front triangle breaking off, but supposedly that had been fixed over a year ago. Sucks.

+1 this should never happen to a women who is so light.I only use my time rxs pedals on my turbo bike,I was thinking of useing them on the road again.
After watching your pictures, there is no way I would use them.

Hey all. Thanks for all the responses. In the spring she was in a race and got forced to the curb and did scrape the pedal on the top of the curb. Perhaps this contributed, maybe not?? She didn't smack the pedal, but only scraped it... who knows? But yeah... at 115lbs, I was shocked that she could break anything!! She does have a sweet 850 watt sprint!!!

I have had these pedals for almost a year and i have had both pedals fail on me. The left pedal exploded on me about 6 months ago . I was going up a small incline and i came out of the saddle and on the down stroke the pedal exploded almost right down the middle. Time were fast to respond and replace the pedal in almost 2 weeks. Then 3 days ago the right pedal exploded in the same manner. I was coming out of a corner, i came out of the saddle to accelerate back to speed and on the down stroke it went. So gar time have been slow to respond to emails!

Never happened to me, but the owner of my primary LBS had that happen about 3 or 4 years ago. I was looking to move to the Time road pedals as I really liked their mountain pedals. He told me of that experience the prior day, I stuck with the mountain pedals and finally moved to Shimano road pedals recently.
