Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Wheelset for <$500

I have been riding two years now and am looking to upgrade my current wheelset. I have an old 2000 Trek 5200 USPS riding on a 2005 Bontrager Race wheelset. I primarily do group rides but do race Sprint and Olympic Triathlons competitively as well. I only weigh 160, so I'm not too worried about myself ravaging the wheels too hard. The Race wheelset is only has 16/20 spokecount and have stayed very true over 1500 miles.

I have it narrowed down to a few choices. Soul 2.0 SL 1330g or Soul 4.0 1660 g (both ~$500). Powerway Solohomer Light 1310g, ebay-($380), Williams 19 1440 g ($500) or used 2009 Easton SLX 1400g used 1 year, but ridden over 4,000 miles, ($350 local craigslist), or finally Blackset Race Ten wheelset 1440 g from Bicyclewheelwarehouse, $380.

Only thing that worries me about the Eastons from Craigslist is they have 4000 miles on them, voiding any kind or warranty. Let me know your thoughts before a poor college student spends some of his summer internship pay...I'd like to get a durable set that is still an upgrade for the old Bontrager Race.

I have sent two emails to PSI within the past month, no response to either...What makes Neuvation better than the others? I understand they have great customer service. What makes their wheel set better than a lighter set from Soul or Bicyclewarehouse? Appreciate the comments so far.

What email are you using? He responds to every email. I am waiting on a wheel from him now, and he usually replies to my email within a few hours to a day.

Although I can't speak to longevity or durability issues--as I just put these on-- I can say that the Velocity Nuvian wheelset is pretty spry and lively, and IMO a good buy at $280 for the 1,672g pair. That said, if I was going to spend $500, I would have popped for their 1,380g Helios set ($440 from bikemania.biz)! That Velocity makes the wheels here in Michigan, just a couple of hours away, puts 'em way up on my desirable list.

But, the Nuvians were in blue, and available in town for $250, so I bought 'em!

I like the Souls on paper, although I've never ridden on them. I came close to buying a set of 4.0s a while ago.

I had some serious email issues last month that were.....bad. I lost a lot of email and it hurt me. My apologies.

Still have a full queue and doing the books pretty heavily to see if I can make this more "full time"....that should make any "roughness" in transaction disappear. One thing is for certain - I am here and sticking around. ....for a long time.

I really like some of the soul wheelsets. But the ones I like cost a lot more than $500.00.

My final four were Williams, Soul, Neuvation, and psimet.

For the money, Rob won easily. Once you're able to speak to him about the build, you'll see.

I bought a set of the Velocity Helios wheels about a month and 300 miles ago. So far, I'm very happy with them.
