Anybody have thoughts on new Google Maps bike app?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anybody have thoughts on new Google Maps bike app?

Not sure what's the best map to use for a road trip. Thanks!

It's usually not really complete and will go out of it's way to put you on a side street even when the main road isn't dangerous. Better off mapping your own way compared to using it IMO.

I like it for mapping out routes in areas that I know. I can then drag the line to my prefered route where necessary. I can tell that they keep updating it.

After my Sunday ride, where my computer stopped working at mile 33, I used Google Maps to estimate my total mileage. I was really surprised when the route that Google gave me would have included about 2 miles on a root-filled, sometimes-muddy dirt hiking trail. I ride the trail on my CX and mountain bike, but there are easy roads to get from points A to B without using this dirt trail. It's things like that that would make me think twice before using Google Maps as my sole source for biking routes in areas that I don't know.
