Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Leonard Zinn's Explanation of Schleck's Chain Drop

"Why did Schleck's chain come off?" as linked to in another thread.

https://velonews.competitor.com/2010/...ome-off_130090

Does this make sense to any of you? If the chain comes off the bottom of the chainring, won't the next pedal stroke pull the chain back on?

I'm betting there is some rear derailleur modification in Sram's near future.

i heard it was sabotaged, take note the timing when the chain came off, it was when he was trying to break/attack from his group going uphill. that's what i eavesdropped from a bar last night.

If he was riding Shimano Di2, you could plausibly (?) suggest malicious code and some kind of remote control, lol.

I do it all the time from my mobile device. I have the code set up and just transmit the moment I see someone using Di2, it's great fun.

I' betting that Shimano is salivating to create a commercial where Schleck (while ideally riding/shifting on the same climb) says I sure wish I had this (referring to Di2) a couple months ago. And to continue the Specialized commercial with those two with the comical verbal jabs, Contador says (while getting questioned about the "chain attack"), "me too".

The same thing happened to me in a cat 4 road race in Sonora, CA. Dropped the chain at the top of the climb peddling under pressure and changing chain rings (ultegra 6700) - had to get off bike, replace chain - did not have Saxo bank to bridge me back. dropped chains happen.

I would have to go along with that. I had a scary chain suck incident where I had stupidly left the chain on the big ring and stopped half way up a hill. when i got going again, the gear was way too much for a standing start and even standing up and pushing hard was difficult. under these circumstances I shifted down to the small ring and the chain came off and wedged against the chain stay. Much later on i checked the limit screws and try as I might I could not cause the chain to drop. They were set perfectly. User error.
