is there a wheel difference between the SRAM and Shimano bikes? That may make a difference as well in my choice (if this were at all up to me!)

48. I talked the LBS into ordering the bike with no deposit. I sat on a fit cycle this morning and they're confident I'll fit the 48. But, worst case scenario, if I don't, I'm under no obligation.
Nope.

Do you know whether or not 48 comes with regular sized wheels (700c)? And if so, did you have any toe overlap?

The 48 does have 700c wheels. I'll give it a good go on the test ride to check out the toe overlap problem.

Even if there is toe overlap, it's never a problem unless you're going <5 mph and swerving around. I've always had it on my road bikes and had an issue with it one time.

FWIW, a guy I ride with has a 2009 S2 54 and he has major toe overlap but loves the aggressive ride.

Sounds a bit high for SRAM Red. Can you get it separately? A lot of online stores have it so cheap, it's better than getting it on the bike sometimes.

Jen - you implied in your other thread that you had some inside info on the 2011 colors. You anticipated ugliness.
What did you hear?

My 2009 Synapse Carbon 3 has Ultegra SL and my 2010 SuperSix has Red. Go Red. It blows doors on Ultegra. GL

I've ridden both. I prefer Ultegra 6700 over Red. I would pay more for Ultegra 6700 because the shifting is quieter, easier, more refined.
At a $700 price difference, with Red higher, this isn't even a close call.
But what would the BF do? The BF guzzles SRAM KoolAid. The BF would take Red over anything at any price. And then, the BF would spend more money to "downgrade" to a SRAM Force front derailleur, because it functions better than Red. (Go figure.)

I am a Sram convert after riding Shimano for many many years (still do). Red (Force/Rival) have pushed the envelope a hell of a lot more than Shimano has done in recent years. I just got a Focus with Ultegra 6700 and like all other Shimano groups I have and had in past, it is excellent. However, factor in cost and weight, and Sram is killing it. It is not hype, it really is good stuff. If I were building a frame up from scratch, I'd do Rival with a Force crank. Light light light and affordable mix there.
