Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Newbie to road racing

Hi, I'm soon to purchase a Giant OCR Zero, its my first real road bike as before I have only ever ridden mountain bikes.

I'm 90% sure this is the bike for me, but was hoping you guys could give me any advice as to what I need to ensure when i buy the bike (size, pedals etc - i use spd at the moment) and whether there are any other bikes at around the 750 pound mark I should probably look at first.

and secondly, I am very comfortable using spds at the moment, but is it worth getting look pedals or anything similar and just getting used to them?

Thanks very much for any help,

Chris

I was in the same boat 6 months ago. I converted from MTB to road. I stayed with the SPDs, and I use SIDI MTB shoes for the road bike. I can still walk in them and they don't cause any undue discomfort. I would say if you are used to the SPDs stick with them, you ar going to have so many other things to readujst, why worry about the pedals?

750 pounds? Maybe you should try looking for a lighter bike. That's gonna suck on the hills.
