Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

As I leave my home today ....

I plan on doing nothing less than 50 miles. Keep in mind my max has been 35 miles. But today I feel good I'm ready for my first 50. Post up your goals for today and safe riding all.

Hope all goes well with your 50 miler.
My goal, but not for today, is to complete a ride with an A level club group. I got half way there yesterday hanging with them for 24 of a 50 miler, that's the farthest I've been able to ride with them. Today is for a recovery ride. Then try again this week.

I remember the days when just finishing a ride was an accomplishment. It felt awesome to reach a mileage milestone. Enjoy the ride.

I jumped from 40 to 78. That was awful. I think I almost died in the last 10 miles from several things.

I can still remember ( a be it vaguely) when I did my first 10 miler. Every stage in life is a milestone. Just keep raising the ante and who know where it will lead to? Life leads us incrementally through this journey. I remember thinking I would never wear those weird spandex shorts and look like a freak with those jerseys. Now I have about as many bike specific clothes as regular street clothes. Its all about change.
Just keep ridding and be safe.

90 minute ride with a few intense efforts mixed in, then later 1 hour of cross training.

Big mileage jumps have their pains...and their rewards. I've found when I start reaching the 50's and above, things start hurting that didn't hurt on shorter rides. Hands, feet, back, neck, etc...

I went from 42 miles, to 70, to 100 and you are right...you start to notice things that you didnt before.

Great thread! I haven't quite decided about my goal for today. I'm either going to go out this morning for another 3 hours (like I did yesterday), or wait until the afternoon and ride with the local performance group. Problem is, I don't know if I can wait until 1:00 for the group ride!

I'm going on my first group ride today! My goal is not to cry when I get dropped (or at least wait until the group is very far ahead before crying).

My goal is to be happy with my sanctioned 60 minutes only at an easy pace ride. Can't wait to be epic again!

Good luck with your 50 today. I did my first 20 miles yesterday and road 15 with my wife today. That's her longest yet. Fun stuff.

After 68 miles and 7,000 feet of climbing yesterday I'm doing a very short, easy recovery ride. That's my goal.

Cool! I remember my first 50, definitely an accomplishment! My goal for today is to sit on the couch and repair my dented rim from yesterday's ride and clean it since it was raining!

Goal today was to do a recon on next week's TT course up Mt. Agamenticus. There's a dirt road section I had to ride down with my road bike - then back up. I managed to stay on the bike except lost traction once and had to dismount. Also survived the 10 to 12% grade near the top.

It was difficult!!

I failed on both counts.

Enjoy your ride OP

Actually went and rode 33 in a light rain... It was actually nice being a little chilled after the god awful heat and humidity that we have been having lately. It was supposed to be a recovery ride, however I ended up keepng the pace up pretty high (for me, a little over 18mph avg)

Then I came home and took a nap.

I'm going for a ride at 4:30, have no goals, no expectations. Just want to get out on the bike. Everytime I get on the bike is actually an accomplishment these days.
