I got .... DROPPED!!
On Sat morn hammer ride.
At the start I felt good, I'm usually up the front with a very small core of strong riders, working hard, attacking on climbs, leading out for sprints..... but this ride we were trying to beat the Garmin......got dropped on a climb with a pal that was struggling as well. Had to TT while taking short cuts to get back on, my friend was @#*#@$ on my wheel.
Still struggled while weaker riders out-rode me, why?
Training too hard?
Cut back on climbing training?
Bio rhythms gone wrong?
I'm an idiot and I need to harden up?
All of the above?
A bit of humble pie does you good.

Yeah, off day.
I heard that if you're riding with faster riders that are going to drop you, it's better to slow down and try to catch up with them after you get dropped instead of going as hard as you can to stay, thus going anaerobic and taking longer to recovery.

I got dropped by a 70 year old granny.
Granted, she was driving a Buick, but I should've been able to keep up. She was going 60 and I was going about 58. The climb was a bit too steep this time.

i know my legs are good. I have been training all year and there was NO reason i should have been that slow otherwise. (6mph up hills / 15mph on flats ) I have since ( infact that same day ) Trashed the wal-Mart pump and got me a Bike shop quality pump. Rode it and feels a TON better. ( 9-10mph hills / 20-22mph flats )

I get dropped all the time. I wish I could blame it on equipment. It would be easier to shell out a few bucks and buy some 'go fast' for my bike, but it is me that is slowing the bike down. I do have a big engine but feel like I am pulling a trailer.
What I need is more endurance. I can hang at the front of the pack and maintain a speed of about 18 mph but I can't keep it up. I run out of gass before the other guys do and I can't figure out what to do about it. One of the guys that I ride with thinks that I am spinning to fast. I keep my cadence about between 90 and 95 on the flats.

But I don't get DROPED, EVER, from this bunch.
I know it sounds like I'm bragging, but I'm one of the strong guys.
You know when you're in trouble, but you can close off the negative thoughts and push through and get back on?
My mind was weak that day.
It was a bad day.
There is always something to learn.
So today I punished myself, I ascended both sides of my local mountain
Now I'm knackered.
I never learn.

Abe Simpson voice, "Why you young whipper snapper, I'd ride ..... ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz"
..and some of the guys are 1/2 my age......
...I was on my old classic steel bike........
... to many hard miles training that week.....
and yes, I'm getting old.

if you are one of the strong riders then i assume you have inflicted a lot of pain in the past on the weaker riders. i hope they are rubbing it in now.

hammer rides aren't exactly great for your overall conditioning. they are fun to do once in a while, but what you get out of them physiologically is lousy. you end up expending energy like you are in a race, ride time is as long as that for a long steady ride, and you need to recover for it the way you recover for a race, except the gains you get from it is not as great as what you gain from racing. do them too many times & you'll end up getting yourself cooked
one last thing, your top form is usually periodic(i.e., graph of top form vs time is sinusoidal) & you can only hold top form for so long. if you are hammering every weekend, you are giving your body no time to rebuild from training stress. are you on a structured training plan by chance?

Either way, I'd just tell everyone you realized your brake was rubbing.

I used to race every week, but now I pick and choose the races that interest me.
The alternative weekend hammer rides are actually harder and longer than racing, I use them to stay sharp.
The week of a race is an easier training week.
Some may think this strategy won't work, but it seems to for me. I once had 6 months off racing but I trained with the young guns,
Went back to racing and nearly fell asleep.
Over training is an insidious thing.
I think I just had a very off day.
