Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Renovating my garage and I need some ideas and inspiration.

I graduated from Culinary School last fall and am just now getting around to clearing out my garage that contained an apartments worth of stuff. I'm kind of excited to finally have a nice space for my bikes, gear, tools, etc because, as of right now, my bike is wedged between two boxes waiting to be donated to goodwill.

My garage is extra deep so that should leave some nice space to carve out a bike area to do some maintenance and repairs, and possibly fulfill my delusions of eventually doing all the needed wrench work myself.

I am looking for some ideas, does any body have a good bike garage setup they can post a pic of? Thanks!

Bikes LOVE to hang from the walls and ceilings, leaving that ever-so precious floor real estate for things that are too bulky or heavy to hang: Like two cars, motorcycle, lawnmower, snow blower, refridgerator, air compressor, tool cabinet, garbage cans, etc. Most car hoods fit under a bike suspended by the wheels from the ceiling. And the hooks are @ $1.49 each. True, you can bang your head on a bike hanging from the ceiling unless you have a really high garage ceiling.

No pics online anymore, but if you envision a garage with all the things listed above on the floor, plus 7 bikes hanging from the ceiling, you have my garage.

Naturally, the most important thing you can do to your garage is make sure you have a white garage door, for all those bike pics.

Okay, so I guess I should make a real suggestion. All I can do is tell you what I'm really lacking in my setup. I have a good Park bike repair stand, but what I really need is a work bench where I can place screws, wrenches, and all the things I'm using while working on the bike. Right now I just have an apron with pockets and I stuff them all in my pockets, which is a pain. Even a little collapsible table would work for most things. But a work bench with a vice would be ideal.

No garage remodel is complete without a kegerator. Just food for thought...

This.

Seriously though (actually, that was serious), I hang my bikes from hooks in the ceiling, in part because I also have two kayaks taking up a TON of space. But a good shop table and pegboard setup is wonderful, particularly if you can get some decent shelving into the mix. I've got a workstand that I simply pull outside, stand up, hook up the bike and get to work. The table is just a wooden door mounted on sawhorses, but it's perfect for my needs, and has additional storage underneath for pumps, cleaning supplies, etc. Keep the table close to the entrance so if you're working in the driveway, your stuff is close at hand.

A little bit of a hijack, but I think it goes with the OP theme.

My kegerator is in the basement, but my garage door is white.

my garage ceiling is too tall to hang bikes. They way it's arranged right now there's not enough room to have them stick out from the wall if hung tires against the wall. Any ideas on how to hang bikes to take up as little distance from the wall as possible?

Ah yesssss... the pegboard. I forgot that, I have 14 feet of 4 foot high pegboard. Very versatile.

But beware the workbench. It will attract and hold tight useless crap with more tenacity than a supermassive black hole. Before you know it, you have an overwhelming pile where your work surface used to be, where all things useful and unneeded will disappear. Clean it off and swear to change your ways? Your spouse will instantly recognize the uncluttered surface area as exactly what he/she needed for his/her crap. I tore mine out this spring, never been happier.

hooks that grab the frame/seat so that you can mount the bike agaist the wall, it only sticks out as far as your handlebars. Or get a hoist bike rack that you can hoist your bike up to your lofty ceiling. They grab the seat and handlebar, and use pulleys to raise the bike.

There was a thread several years back titled "show us your workshop" or such. Many good ideas there. Search and you will be rewarded.

Simple, cheap, and you can hang a few bikes...

A suspended closet or shower rod hung from the ceiling is adjustable to whatever height and length you want and you can hang the bikes by their saddles.

All you need is a couple eyelet lag screws, a couple eyelet threaded screws, a metal (or wood but I'd use metal) closet/shower rod, and some chain or cable. Cheap, easy, and versatile.

What are those large rubber hooks, probably about 5 inches long that you can use to hang bikes from? I'm moving into a new apartment in the fall which has a full sized walk in closet. I was thinking about putting some hooks up on one wall so I can store bikes nicely and neatly. Can I just get these at a place like Lowes or Home Depot?

I recently bought three of these for my bikes and I couldn't be happier with them. My garage ceiling is about 11' 6" and I have no problems hitting my head on them. It also keep them out of harm's way courtesy of three kids.

They should have something, you might try the ladder hooks since they stick out about 12" from the wall.
