What to look for when buying wheels off of creigs list

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Buying used requires you to pay attention.

I have a feeling you may end up with knockoff wheels, like Mevics or Zepps.

In all seriousness, check to to see the spokes are tight, rims are true, no dents or flat spots in the rim, no funny noises in the hub. That's it.

Personally, I'd prefer not to buy anything that was expensive and that I wasn't that familiar with, off of Craigslist.

You can get cracks around the spoke holes, or in the sidewall of the rim, that don't necessarily put a rim out of true, but you sure wouldn't want to buy one like that.

+1

I have bought 2 sets from CL and they turned out great. Specially if you get them from markets that have a population of riders with a lot of disposable income. You can get very nice deals if you pay attention.

I suspect that this is one of those questions that if you have to ask you shouldn't do it. People might try to sell you wheels that have been in an accident or with way too many miles.
