Garmin Edge 705 battery died during ride - data lost forever?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin Edge 705 battery died during ride - data lost forever?

Near the end of my Mt. Evans climb, my battery died. I tried to upload the ride to Training Center and GarminConnect and get nothing. I looked in the History folder in the GPS and there is no tcx file with today's date on it. Is this ride really completely gone? Is there a way to recover the data? It had to record it somewhere but just didn't get to format it correctly I would think. Anybody got any tips to recover the ride? This is pretty much my most impressive ride I've ever done and I've got no data to show for it...

Sorry, but w/o the data, we just can't believe you.

Did you forget to charge it?
I have never run my 705 down, even on rides that last from dawn to past sunset.

I kind of forgot and kind of didn't. It's a ridiculous story but I realized last night that it was low on batteries but had just gone out the front door a few minutes earlier to grab my video camera from my car to charge. The front door wasn't the quietest thing in the world and I didn't want to keep waking people up in the house so I elected to wait until morning to grab it while I was wrenching on my bike. I hooked it up to my computer to charge it and it was on there for about an hour. I figured that would be enough (otherwise I'd have taken my laptop with me and charged the gps in the car on the way). So, basically I didn't charge it enough because I didn't want to wake people up with a loud front door.

As an aside for anybody in the know. The gps does have an 80KB NVM file with today's date on it but I have no idea what that is. Is that today's ride info in the wrong format maybe? If so, think it's recoverable? HELP!!!!

there is a laps folder. Inside it is another folder named "94" and inside that is two files.

data.dat
Lap1.dat

They were both modified today and the second one is 312KB.

First, try to run checkdisk on the garmin drive. Probably won't help here, but sometimes it does.

Failing that, one of those files is corrupted and is preventing the tcx file from being created. Try copying both files to another location, like your desktop. Whichever file fails is the bad one. Unfortunately you have to delete it. The next time you plug the garmin in it will create the tcx file.

Could it be that the 705 is also full?

Whenever mine won't write the latest file that's usually the reason, I just have to delete some old rides and re-plug it in and it will save the last ride. If not, I have no idea...

It could be, but the scenario sounds more like a corrupted lap file, especially given the shutdown. Unfortunately, that also means that it almost certainly be the important lap that is corrupted...

Hmmm, neither file failed when I copied it. Here's a question. I hooked the Garmin up to the computer when I got home but never powered the thing back up. Do you think if I disconnect it and turn it on it will pick up where it left off and then create the tcx file? I guess there's no harm in trying that right now. Here goes...

So the unit completely reset and asked me all the introductory questions about time zone, which ANT+ accessories i use and everything. I went on the unit and checked my history and it said there is no history. Sweet. So the unit thinks everything is gone but when I hook it up to the computer, I can still access a ton of tcx files. I'm confused.
