Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Test rode 2011 Spec. Secteur Elite

Finally got to test ride a 2011 Specialized Secteur Elite today in my size. The LBS ordered it for me last week, not necessarily to buy but so I could test ride it. I had ridden a 2010 with 105 gruppo and loved it. This ride had the SRAM Apex gruppo. The ride was the same vis a vis comfort and speed. The SRAM gear range is very nice, almost like a triple. The upshift was fast for the cassette, less so for the chainring. Downshifting the casssette was not as crisp but that's to be expected with the double-tap, I guess. The LBS guy did say the bike was just put together on Monday and initially tuned and that it would need further tuning as the bike was broken in. Made sense to me. I like the ergonomics of the SRAM hoods better than the 105's. I also liked not having to touch the brake levers to shift. I do like the handlebar on the 2010 more tho, it having that flat spot in the drops. But the fact I can shift easily in the drops on the 2011, and the fact I can pull the shift lever in makes up for that. The brakes were very responsive and solid. As for speed, I was able to get up to a fast cruising speed very quickly and comfortably. From what I can tell, the only difference between the 2010 and 2011 is the gruppo and handlebar. The rims, seatpost, saddle, etc. all appear to be what's on the 2010.

The guy said he'd sell it to me for $1250. I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy it tomorrow, when the fitting guy is in (he wasn't in today or I'd have already bought it). I'll post pics at that time.

Now to clear my weekend schedule so I can ride, baby, ride!

You could probably negotiate a swap on the handlebar to one with a flat top for a few $

I wonder when Specialized is going to add the 2011s to their web site. I did a quick search and didn't see them. The Secteur Elite is on my short list of bikes to get.

I got the 2011 Secteur Comp with new 105 with the shift cable under the bar tape and the carbon seat stays with zertz in them. Awsome bike. Wish I could ride it more right now but am stuck in the hospital because we just had our first baby boy sunday morning. Its a great bike though.

If you can swing the extra cash, test ride the 2011 Roubaix Elite. $2000 at my LBS. Same components (I think?, it comes with SRAM Apex), but I found the ride much smoother.

You are dead on with the 105 vs Apex comparison, I found the Apex hoods MUCH more comfortable, and I love the doubletap shifting already.

Now all I have to do is wait for them to find one in a 61...

interesting anomaly - this link, when you go to the 'geometry' shows a 75 deg seat tube ...
even the bigger bikes have the way too steep seat tube

which is way different from the 73 deg seat tube on the US specs...
intentional?
compensation for what may be a 'shorter' rider type? but even in the large frame sizes?
over-compensation?

or just a very bad typo?

There was a discussion about the geometry and I believe it will not be accurate until the "official" update on Sept 1.
