Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

"Giant TCR Once" carbon bike - has anybody here heard of it?

I found it listed on a used bicycles website for 1400€ ($1768 USD), specced with Dura Ace. But Google hasn't helped me much with finding out more about it.

Here's a picture:

Can anybody shed some light?

I raced one of these frames for a couple of years. It was the top spec'ed "team" frame from about 2002ish (at the time Giant was sponsoring the Spanish team ONCE). It's very light, corners well, and I liked mine in general. It does have a 1" carbon steerer fork with an integrated headset; headset parts for that are getting harder to find and the newer 1.125" steerer forks make for a stiffer front end.

Here in the US at least, that asking price would be high for an 8 year old bike with 9 speed DA parts.

I crashed on mine in a crit two years ago and cracked the seat tube; it's still hanging in the garage as I want to try fixing it someday.

Nice light race bike with dura ace. Good stuff. Plus it's a Giant. You can't go wrong there.

It was their top of the line bike back in 2003. It is shown with Campy in the link so it might be a previous year that came with 9sp Dura Ace. If it's in good shape the price seems fair. Not a super deal but not too bad either.

i think once was a sponsor for their pro team....i believe it was just a TCR with a sticker of a sponsor on it.

hence the "team" bike.

They're calling it ONCE, but it's not a real one I think. I recall the replica's being bright yellow (same color as my fork).

Thanks all for the replies. I believe I can negotiate the price down a little, as it's customary in my country (Finland) to set an asking price of 10-15% more than what you're prepared to accept.
As many of you have said, this must be a bike from 2002 or 2003. Assuming the gruppo is from the same year, how is Dura Ace from that year? I would think that many advancements have been made by Shimano in the last 7-8 years
Also, this would anyway be my first road bike, so do you think it would be a great deal if I negotiate the price down a little?
Thanks!

It's "real" as in, it's a team logoed bike. Giant made yellow aluminum ONCE logoed bikes a couple of years prior to these. Mine differs a bit in graphics from this one so they're probably a year apart.

I don't think that bike is worth anywhere near the asking price.

Maybe I should give some reference: my net monthly income, which is above average but not so much, is 2500€/mo. Still pricey?

If its in immaculate condition, fits perfectly, and you like yellow...its still way overpriced. Maybe $1200. Emphasis on the maybe.

I don't understand what you're getting at. You said 1400€ was pricey, and I thought you couldn't know what pricey is unless you knew what the cost of life in my country is. Doesn't it make sense?

no. pricey is based on the fact that the technology of every aspect of that bike has moved on. You posted US dollars and you've just had two US people posit that the bike is way over priced.

You asked for insight and then you get it and you argue with it. So buy it, don't buy. Whatever.

1700 bucks is too much for that bike in my opinion. Besides for a little bit more u can get a new one. This will be the way the sstuff is going lately in the market, why get a used 2 grands bike when for the same amount u can get a new one with all the warranties over the frame
