Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I regret to inform you Mr. President, but our BF Intelligence Sources tell us you would only qualify for Sub-Fred status.

I thought those were jeans. I was going to relegate him to Joe status, particularly since I don't believe he's allowed to operate a motor vehicle on public roads. Plus, that bike is just too much. Even the Freds need to draw the line somewhere.

Looks like he is cross-chaining in that last photo; appears to be in the granny ring and the smallest cog.

You know how the presidential vehicles have how many ever tons of steel for protection?

Maybe the president is required to use a heavy bicycle as a security measure?

Heck no. When he needs to go somewhere that requires use of public streets, they not only make him ride in the back while someone else drives, but they surround the whole car just to be safe.

by all accounts I've read Bush is quite a bike/run enthusiast... i've heard he still runs about 5 miles a day and still is active riding his mtb and road bikes when he can... impressive for a guy in his sixties

They do that for me too... so I don't hurt anyone else.

Yes he is. He rode with a few Airmen when he dropped by Travis AFB a few years ago and he was pretty fast on two wheels.

that is very cool that he did that. there are a lot of reasons to not care much for bush, but you can never say he doesn't care about the troops, even now that he's out of office...

When I first moved to Arlington VA in 2008 I worked for a couple of months at Revolution Cycles in Clarendon, down in the basement as a build-monkey. One day upstairs in the shop area they were building a Trek Top Fuel (2009 model, I believe; this would have been late summer 2008). The lead mech said "Check it out, it's the prez's new bike". It was the bike that would replace the one you see in the photo (a 2006 I believe). I joked "Wow, can I touch it?", and they laughed and said yes.

And that...was my brush with greatness!
