Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hit 1000 miles today !

Bought my CAAD9 on June 10th of this year. I hit 1000 miles today. I have lost 21 pounds ( 190 to 168 ), pant size has gone from 35 to 32-33 and my neck went from 16.5 to 15.

My ride today was a riot. Got a flat tire at 15 miles. Pulled the nail out, put in a replacement tube and kept riding. My goal was to do my first metric century. I have a 30 mile loop that starts in my neighborhood so I thought I would just do 2 laps and take a minor excursion for the difference. Well, at 30.28 miles my back tire went flat again. Don't know why but it did. Will replace the tire and tube tomorrow. I did not finish my metric century but 30.28 miles put me at 1000.28 miles since June 10th. That made me so happy that I did not even care about the flat. I walked 1.5 miles home with my flat tire and could have cared less.

The bike forum has been my principal source of information. I still know crap about riding a bike but I know I am hooked. It's not exercise. It's a lifestyle. At 37 I am close to my high school weight. I never thought I would achieve this kind of weight loss and I never thought I would ride 1000 miles since June.

Thank you BF !

Congrats on the 1000 miles. Need to be careful about that weight loss though, that's a lot of weight loss for the time, while already being a fairly low weight. Might want to start leveling off and eating a bit more to try to get some more performance and worry less about the weight. Good luck though in the future!

ok, i dont get how some of us can loose 21 pounds in 3 months with only 1000 miles. it would take at least 3000 miles to loose real fat/gain muscle and loose the extra, with great nutrition (very dedicated)...you start looking healthier and simply better.

Keep them miles coming,

=-)

Thanks Create. Your advice is spot on. My eating habits were HORRIBLE. I started tracking calories on Mynetdiary at the same time I started riding. I recently joined the YMCA to get some weight lifting in as well. I ride 25 miles three to four times a week. I actually want to bike more now and perform better. I had hoped to lose some weight but it just keeps coming off so I have not fought it. I sure as hell don't think I would look good at 160 so weight lifting is in my future. I have no muscle mass at all as I have never lifted a weight in my life and I have a desk job. A balance will arrive sooner or later.

Tomorrow morning, I ride mile 1. I bought a MTB back when I was in my last semester of Law School, a trek 4300. I needed the daily rides to work out the stresses of the last semester and bar review. It has sat in my garage for the last several years until a few months ago when i took it for a few rides, and decided to get an inexpensive road bike to take out. I bought my neighbor's Raleigh Grand Prix and brought it to the shop to get a tune-up. Its back home now, and tomorrow morning i'll be heading out the levee to ride.

I've watched a friend lose 60 lbs (270-210) over the period of a year, and he has inspired me to get out there again and get to it. I figure I want to go from 225-195 lbs.

Tomorrow, I ride mile 1. And as I ride the levee along the Mississippi River, I'll give the finger to Katrina and what it did to us 5 years ago.

Congrats on the miles! That was my summer goal, but I've been sidetracked at bit. About to hit 800 tho, so just might make it.

Nice job, i hit 1k miles about a month ago and it felt great. Thats a huge amount of weight to lose though in that little time, kind of a bit concerning but maybe you lose weight fast. I know a couple people that do.

I set Mynet diary to lose 2 lbs/week. By counting calories and riding it came off pretty easy. I had such deplorable eating habits that I should have weighed more than 190 honestly. I have had only 2 beers since June albeit I was never much of a drinker anyways despite playing in cover bands every weekend. I never eat red meat now and .....gasp..... no more products from FRito Lay. Junkfood was a big issue for me. Im on the wagon there.

So i think my weight loss came from an absolute lifestyle change mostly. My diet was so bad ! 1,000 miles is peanuts to some of you but I have been physically inert my whole adult life. Hell, I smoked a pack a day only 6 years ago ( and Im a pharmacist so now I am an anti smoking evangelist).

My results should be atypical since my lifestyle and inertia were so pronounced. I doubt I can lose much more nor do I want to lose much more.

Sweet, I bought my road bike about the same time you did. I'm at around 1500 miles. Have a goal of 3000 miles. According to my Excel spreadsheet and the linear trend line, I'll hit it sometime in November. We'll see if I can ride that much. For August I'm around 750-850.

For the people who are saying it's not good to loose too much weight too fast.. why? It's all simply a numbers game. Calories in, calories out. This guy is eating right, riding his bike and losing weight. He is doing it right.

Walking home is no fun. Have you thought about carrying a patch kit?

I carry a patch kit and a spare tube/pump/cartridges. I had already used the tube when I hit a nail. I could have patched my second flat but I would have been home by the time I had patched it. I walked less than two miles ( carrying my shoes...that sucked) so it was not real far.

Put a new tire and tube on the back wheel today. I have had 3 flats in three months ( 2 from nails ) so I figured I better swap it out.
