Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road cyclists- beer drinkers?

It seems that a stereotypical roadie drinks a lot of beer and a mt. biker smokes a lot of weed. Do you?

For all the Aussies out there, I really miss chugging VB and Tooeys while I was in the land of OZ.

There's a place out here in Palo Alto called the Alpine Inn (Rosotti's/Zott's to locals) where you can ride up, lean your bike against a picnic bench, and get a good cheeseburger and an ice cold beer after a little hill climb. Nothing like an ice cold one on a burnin' hot day! It's a traditional watering hole for cyclists and bikers...

Good luck for your team. VB is definitely better than the Tooheys. My first time having Tooheys it seemed to taste better but you cant go wrong with VB. Oh and if it is the grand final you must have at least a dozen.

I spent some time in the Blue Mountains and discovered what I think is the best of the Aussie beers that I tried: Coopers. Although, I never drank a bad Assuie beer (Fosters is never on the drink list). The Coopers Red label and Yellow label were our favorites. Anyway, we then took off down to Taralga on the way to Canberra. Thank goodness the Taralga Hotel (if you ever stop say Hi to Mick the owner bartender) had plenty of Coopers.

Absolute crisis down here a while ago. (i think I've got this right)...The government brought in some new alcohol tax, so C.U.B., avoiding having to put up the price of a lot of their products, DROPPED THE ALCOHOL CONTENT(!!! ) of Carlton Cold, and a few other beers.....AAAAAAGH

Now VB is one of the few left with a 4.9% alcohol content.

I know it's wussy, but I was a Carlton Cold man until it turned into a psuedo light beer.

I've gotta shatter an illusion: I've never had a Foster's Lager, nor have I ever seen anyone drinking it in my 37 years!!!
So, this percpetion that Fosters is ubiquitous in Australia, and synonymous with Aussies is kinda weird

I heard once from an Aussie that Fosters is the Pearl, Schlitz, or Miller HighLife of Australia -- i.e. monkey pee that self-respecting Aussies don't drink.

I gotta weigh in here w/my beverage preferences.

When I first started drinking in college, beer was my drink, because it was most plentiful and I did what my peers did. Eventually, I learned to favor liquor and mixed drinks. Beer is just too much liquid, unless I am really trying to pace myself (in which case it's an asset). It's just no fun having to hit the men's room every 15 minutes.

My favorite drinks are:

Crown Royal w/Coke (the 2 were made for each other);
Scotch on rocks, no water (GlenMorangie is tops);
Cosmopolitan (my girlfriend makes em really good, but she has to be around for me to drink one in public -- a girly drink);

Fat Tire is my favorite. Gee, I wonder why! I also have a friend who mt bikes and he also drinks beer. Does not smoke, weed or otherwise. So what about the mt bikers that do drink beer? I agree with PiratePete. That seems somewhat stereotypical.

Ha I've heard this. I think Fosters might have been popular about 30 or 40 years ago, but for some reason it became primarily an export -- it even made it on to The Simpsons

Crown should only be mixed with anything else on rare occasions. If you don't wanna taste it, don't drink it.

I'm a beer fan, have been for a while. Ambers and reds are tops on the list (Fat Tire, Pinstripe Red from Dolores Brewing Co., Roswell Alien Amber from a brewery in southern NM, Avalanche Amber, etc. I like a good stout on occasion as well. With the exception of most lighter colored beers, I haven't met too many that I don't like.

However, the logic that beer consumption is especially high among roadies and not everybody else doesn't compute, at least not where I live. Everybody I know enjoys a good beer. Some even enjoy crappy beer.

Wow, don't I feel like a simpleton? I enjoy Budweiser, and treat myself to something special with a Corona with a lime on occasion. Bud has no fat, according to the label. Woo!
I have, however, had some sort of imported German beer (Mom's a beer lover). It was really dark (I like dark beer. Had a hogarden [sp?] once. Mmmmmmm) and extrememly strong. It came in a huge bottle (metric version of a 40, I guess...), and had a 9.5% alcohol content. I very rarely drink, and all that alcohol sure surprised me when I stood up to find some food. Woo!

"Lite" beers suck.

Of course you might want to put this in the general cycling forum to get some Mtn Bikers to view it.

It's all marketing. I think Miller owns it now anyway...so if it was ever good, it is now ruined....
