What would you upgrade on this bike.
2003 Trek 1000, weyless carbon fork, look pedals, bontrager select from wheel, some cheap campy cranks, computer. What would you upgrade on this bike, if you had about $1000 to spend (but you don't have to spend all of it). A badass used CF frame, a nice wheelset, shifters?

I would upgrade the frame. That's where you'll get the most weight advantage over your 1000 the cheapest. Depending on what they costs, you could get a new gearset and crank.

If I truly had a grand to spend on upgrades, I would sell the bike and combine the funds to buy an overall better mix - frame + components. Of course, I wouldn't buy anything new....

No need to up grade, this makes a good spare bike.

The wheels! Fast wheels make you faster with less effort. They spin up to speed with ease and if they are real light, they climb well. I put Rolf Vector Pros on a my Merlin 3 years ago and damn if the on line comments about picking up 1.5 mph average or more wasn't true.

I agree with everyone on the frame as the frame is generally not worthy of upgrading from a financial standpoint. Barring that then go for new wheels that can be used on a new frame once you have enough money for such. My personal choice would be to squirrel the funds away for a whole new bike. You're about half to two-thirds of the way to a really nice race-ready frame with 105, Ultegra or Centaur components, fancy wheels and bits of carbon everywhere such as the Trek 2100/2200/2300 or Specialized Allez Comp Cro-Mo. If you want, you could spring for the Specialized Allez Elite or move up to the Trek 1500 right now and keep the Trek 1000 as a commuter/beater bike. Of course there are other bike brands to chose from than just trek and Specialized. However, my point is that you will probably find that your money will go further if you invested in a whole new bike rather than upgrading what you have. This way you will have two bikes and that gives you even more flexibility.
