Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anybody use Map my ride?

Is it any good? Is it worth paying for membership?

My wife uses Mapmytracks. She does it right through her phone. It is pretty cool. Shows the whole route, elevation changes, times, etc. Fun to look at after our ride. She loves that kind of stuff.

I play with the free version from time to time. The ads are annoying. I'm not sure how much it's worth paying for, though, as there are several other free alternatives.

I use it to log my workouts to keep track of total mileage. Been doing this because I didn't have a garmin earlier in the summer. So for now, I download the garmin files from garmin connect and upload into Map My Ride (They ALWAYS need correcting). Next year I will be using Garmin Connect exclusively.

I do however like the mapping feature, and the new beta version gives some very nice detail on climbs. It isn't very edit friendly though.. hard to fix a mistake halfway through a 100 mile mapped route without clearing half of the map or starting over.

I have always used gmap-pedometer. But I don't like how the maps print out. If a route is over 10 miles I cannot fit the whole route on a single page with adequate detail to know where I am going.

I was going to say its ok for basic route distance and elevation changes, but i think coasting said it best and has changed my mind. Ads suck as well.

It appears that you can only upload routes from a GPS device. I don't have one and don't plan on getting one. I wanted something that I could use to plan & track routes that has a better printing function than gmap-pedometer.

I live in a rural area with roads that just end abruptly and isn't on any type of logical grid. Just going out exploring could mean an accidental 30 mile ride "around the block." Driving around is a big waste of gas. Paper County maps suck. gmap was the best thing I found so far for planning rides.

Any other suggestions?

Hmm..after trying to do the free membership for the past ten minutes with no luck because it asks for a special code which never apears...I thus conclude: donkey balls

Okay, so the site sucks. You are all correct.

Well, that's more severe than I've seen, but you confirmed my suspicions. I just noticed that some of the hills I climb pretty easily show as 15 % grades, whereas something that almost had me puke was listed as a mere 5 %.

I'm a fan of google earth for making routes. Good elevation profile and you can take a low altitude flight over your route when you are done. It is nice to see how much traffic is on the road and the size of the shoulders on the route. But I cannot figure out how to transfer the route to a map that is easily read on a bike.

There's a way to get cue sheets off of gmap-pedometer, if that would fill your need.

If you map out very short sections then they're pretty close to the USGS survey data. Garmins work the same way when they run out of space. basically, it takes so many sample locations based on the total length of the plot. The longer it is, the more detail it loses and it underestimates everything. With the Garmin units, you can record so much data at 1 sample per second (3.5hrs on the 305) and after that time frame, it starts to drop every other second as it records past the limit. It continues to widen the samples and as it does, it too loses detail.

I used mapmyride (free) for the longest time to track my habits until I bought the Garmin unit. Being able to track and map things like cadence and HR alongside the data is way more beneficial for me. Now it's all on GarminConnect.

Around here.
Traffic = 0
Shoulders = 0
View= farm land for miles and miles and miles with a random small town(less than 20 houses) thrown in for good measure.

I used MapMyRide for a while last year after I got my iPhone but just never liked it. I found it wildly inaccurate and the web site and maps pretty kluged up. When I got my new road bike this year I downloaded Cyclemeter ($4.99) and find it superior. It interfaces directly to google maps and sends out emails with your stats when you are finished. If you set up a route as a standard ride it will also give you splits against your previous rides on the same route. The latest version will also analyze your movement and automatically take out your stopped times so you can just start the app and ride without having to pause it. I tried that for the first time today and it matched my Sigma computer within 2 minutes - so not perfect but OK for a 32 mile ride but it tracked the route perfectly. (Even my detours when I got lost!)

In fact, if you are on a long ride it can even send out status emails with your location at prescribed intervals if needed. I think that would be cool for a long multi-day charity ride or something. Overall I think it is pretty well thought out:
