how do i know if my tubulars are glued safely?
i just got a used pair of carbon tubular wheels, and since they are my first i am not exactly sure if they are glued on right. when they are deflated, it looks like the glue is peeling slightly in a couple places, but when they are inflated, they appear to be solid on the wheels. i want to avoid them falling off the wheel. how can i tell if they are safe?

If you can rip them off with your bare hands they aren't on well enough.

Maybe. We haven't seen his hands. If he's like the gorilla of a bike shop mechanic I used to know, he probably could.
FYI - I can remove my tubulars with my bare hands - just takes me a while.

I always knew mine were glued safely because I glued them myself... and because it was darn near impossible to take them off.

If your thumbs hurt and you take 2 minutes to contemplate giving up.... they are on just fine.

And +1 to gluing myself. It's the only way to know for sure how they were done.

BITD, at every race you had to go thru bike check... every class, all the time...
biggest part of which was 'Big Al', who had hands like the steel presses which stamp auto body panels.
he would grab your bike, put his mitts on the wheels and drive his thumbs into the sides or your tahrs.
If they didn;t roll off the rim - you passed...
if he rolled them, your number was marked and ONLY cleared after you went thru again...
if you had **** tahrs (Wolbers, Hutchinsons) the rimtape would stay glued and the tire would rip away from the tape - you fail

tubie glue is pressure sensitive, this means that if the tire is pumped up, the glue is stronger. the pressure also holds the tire to wheel. after its been glued on a while, the glue is stronger when deflated and should come off when pulled on...which is what one needs to do to change the tire. even if you glued it yourself, check it regularly. I've had glue go bad after getting wet.
