Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Drafters

So yesterday my cousin and I went for a ride. He's a bit slower than me so he'd fall behind at times and so I'd slow down and wait for him.

We get to a light and there is another cyclist. We all take off, I look behind and see someone behind me and figure it's my cousin. I'm riding at a good pace and he's still right behind me. I get a good look and it's the other guy. I keep going figuring he's going to pass me, but he's right on my ass the whole time. I realize he's drafting on me and it really pisses me off since I don't know who the phug he is, and plus my cousin is falling more and more behind. I slow down, so does he. Then I REALLY slow down, and finally he passes me up. I had to stop to wait for my cousin.

Cool story bro, I know, but just thought it was annoying as hell and who does that type of $heeyat.

I thought the punchline was going to be that the "drifter" was actually just your shadow.

Ya. I've been wondering about that ettiquete. I've done drafted (tense?) off strangers And i've had em draft off me. Plenty.

I would definitley say something to someone on a fixed gear. If I could tell somehow.

I think the word you are looking for is drafters.
And you are doing this:

See this thread for a pretty thorough thrashing of this topic.

Drafters

Yeah. Drafting. Sorry, not up to date w/all the terminology. Still stuck on Freds and Doris'.

I looked for a similar thread, but found none. Probably because I was looking for drifters.

Drifters are integrated brake-shifter levers that can't seem to stay in proper adjustment...

Here's what I do when someone is drafting and I want them off:

1) turn around and say "You're riding a bit close to me, aren't you?"

So long as they leave a bit of distance for safety, I don't mind if strangers draft off me for a while. I'm a good target, since I'm taller and wider than most road cyclists. I usually have my ipod going anyway, so I don't even notice them.

It's happened to me twice, before yesterday. I just usually slow down, but I will probably just tell them, "don't draft me" or wave to pass me. I shouldn't have to slow down for this bs.

LMAO. I totally forgot to update that thread. I kept the '07 Fuji Team frame. They gave me a nice gift card.

if they are drafting you, they aren't overtaking you. that's a good sign.

Nah, let's stick with "drifters." Like the guy I passed a coupla months ago, he on a high-end road bike. As I approached, he was dawdling along, weaving all over the lane. I yelled out, "I'll be on your left...er, right...er whatever!" Turned out to be a BF member.

On the whole, though, true drifters seem to drift toward the MUP/bike path. I think natural selection has taken care of those who do so on the streets.
