HELP! Garmin 705 recording missing details
All of a sudden this week, my Garmin .tcx files contain only header & summary data, no trackpoint details - no HR, no Cadence, no Lat/Long, no Elevation.
It's been like that the last 3 rides.
I have a weird suspicion that it has something to do with laps - there's nothing in the lap folder. But that's a total guess.
Anyone ever have this happen? Know how to fix it? I have done a soft reset, and am considering a hard reset, but thought I'd ask here first.
I'm on the 3.1 software version, which is the latest. The summary data is in the history on the unit If I try to look at the lap data, it hangs and can't be shut off - could only turn it off by connecting it to the computer.
To make it especially irritating, I did an amazing ride today that I've never done before, and I don't have a record of it.

Never had that problem. I do not use the lap function (except maybe by accident). there has never been anything in my laps folder either. It looks like the file size is about a megabyte an hour for me...your .tcx files must be tiny then, huh?
do you use routes? what software are you using to download and display?

Your device may be full (the drive, not the folder), or something may be corrupt. If you have windows, run "error check" on the drive.

any other ideas?
Luker, I'm using SporTracks to download, two of the problem routes are just plain recording, one was doing a course (Training | Do Course). The file is 2kb, and when I look at it in an xml editor it just contains header tags, no tracks or trackpoints.

probably a good idea to contact Garmin at this point, if you haven't already.

See if there are any others having the same problem on the Garmin Forum. Also, check if you have the latest firmware update. If all your rides are saved into garmin connect or ridewithgps, it may also help to just clear the device history.

Trying to wait till I talk to Garmin, but yes I think that's my next step. I'm still holding out hope to retrieve the data for Saturday's ride.
Thanks, yes, I did check that. I just tried turning it off and on again, though, thanks. Unfortunately, that didn't fix it.
Thanks.
Others have similar problems, but they are all seeing corrupted files in the \Laps folder, and are on an older version of the software. I posted a note.

What are the sizes of the files? Have you looked at the raw XML? It's possible the data is there but there is some corruption that is preventing it from loading properly.

I have looked at the .tcx files in an xml editor, and there are just no Track and Trackpoint entries. No start and end tags, no content. There are just entries at the summary level - total ride time, total distance, avg. HR, avg Cadence.
P.S., thanks for taking the time to help.

And FWIW, for viewing XML files Intestinal Exploder, err, Internet Explorer, is actually pretty useful.

Very interesting. You're getting HRM and Cadence picked up, as well as total distance, so all the sensors are working properly. If a hard reset doesn't fix it, it sounds like the GPS receiver in your unit might be borked.

The other thing I noted was the length of the laps - they total 5 or so hours. Holding down the lap button for 3 seconds might flush any accumulated data into the files.

But there should still be trackpoint data for cadence, speed, and HR, and maybe altitude. Just no lat/long data. Maybe try disabling the GPS receiver then? If the GPS receiver is bad and the unit is waiting for some output from it, maybe turning GPS off will allow some data to be recorded.

I'm going to call Customer Support in a few minutes.

Fixed with a hard-reset. The dude at customer support didn't have any suggestions for reconstructing the lost rides, sadly.
Thanks for your time everyone.

Basically, as it is running, it record to a LAP#.dat file. When you press the lap button, it closes out the file and starts a new one. When you plug it in to a computer, it constructs all of the dat files into the tcx file.
