Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are my shoes too big?

May sound Like a dumb question, but these were my first pair of cycling shoes that i got at a discount. The bike store that sold them to me turned out to be seriously not trustworthy... And after a season, I feel like I have too much room in the front, sides, etc. The guy who sold them to me said "you have to have room for when your feet swell and because the shoes don't stretch or break in." I suspect he was just trying to clear stock, because he didn't have many other sizes for me to try.

These are a 46, but i printed out Sidi's sizing ruler and it seems like i might be a 44.

Here's a bad picture to kind of show how much room I have in the front:

Thanks dudes.

Your cycling shoes should be snug (snugger than you'd normally wear running shoes for example) - you foot should not move around in them.

Your shoes look a bit long. If they are also too wide for your foot, then I would say they are too big. They should be snug with no movement between your foot and the shoe.

Ridden 1 season. Bottoms are scratched up but they're as functional as the day I got them.
The reason the bottoms have scratches, btw, is that i made the mistake of wearing them on some rides with people that wanted to "get into cycling" which turned into "walk half the time" which caused me to scratch up the soles. If you wanted them I'd clean em up and put on a new set of keo grip cleats and heel pads.

To the fiance'? You never have to justify new shoes to women.

They understand.

I say it depends, I had to go size in a half since last year doe because my feet swelling more than before. Sidi shoes are pretty narrow compared with other brands, and looks like the OP has kind'a a wide feet also, the shoe is bigger but he is filling the shoe just fine. Sidis do stretch a little bit but all depends of the foot also. In my specific case im around a 44 but since my feet swells i have to go to a 45 to play safe and have enough room to wiggle the toes.

When u ride the shoe feels wrong? The heel gets off or something? if it feels ok just keep them dude, but it is your decision after all.

I've ridden with shoes that were a little too big. No big deal. Try thicker socks or double socking it.
i've also had cycling shoes that were too small. Now that's a problem for which there is no solution.

I was halfway in between sizes on Shimano MTB shoes so I put in a thicker insole. (at least until I break out the winter socks).

Obviously this does nothing for length.

Are they uncomfortable? Does your foot move around in the shoe while you pedal? Can you tighten them down enough to prevent that without them being uncomfortable?

If they're uncomfortable, or your foot is moving around, you need to get a better fitting shoe. If not, I wouldn't worry about how much room is left in the front.

Put a set of insoles in them, and they will be just right,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, available most anywhere - don't get the soft foam type, rather opt for the ones that have a cloth like top, and semi firm foam on the bottom. They will be more comfortable too.....

i'm kind of swimming in them. i have to clamp them down like crazy to keep my foot in place, even that doesn't really work. thing is, i was led to believe (right after i first bought my first road bike) that this was the right way for the shoes to fit. which is infuriating.

i went to get fit from a shop i trust, and sure enough they're a whole size too big.

2009 Ergo 2's for $270? sound good?

Well... not always. I had a bit of an argument with my wife, but then I just said... think about it: I literally spend more time in my cycling shoes than any other shoes I own. They're worth spending the money on. And that worked.

In any event, yeah, those look way too big.

One way to tell is if the ball of your foot, where the main power flows through, fits into the sole comfortably. If it's sitting on the rise of the sole then it's too big.

If you are going to get another pair and it comes down to doubt about going too big or too small, remember, go too big.
