Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mavic Shoes: Customer Service Experience

Back in May, I bought a pair of Mavic Pro Road shoes. They fit great, are light and stiff, and are inexpensive compared to similar carbon, thin-soled shoes. Life was good until, a month ago, I started snapping the heads off the cleat bolts on one of the shoes. No, I didn't do it with a wrench. (Never touched them with a wrench.) It appears that the anchors had come loose and the repeated cycles weakened the bolts until the heads popped off -- while the shoes were off my feet and just sitting in the floor.

At the store's direction, I shipped the shoes to Mavic. Two weeks later (including shipping time), a Mavic box appeared on my doorstep. Inside was a pair of the new and improved Mavic Pro Road shoes with redesigned soles and cleat mounting anchors. No questions. No hassles.

Obviously, I would rather not have had my shoes let me down in the days leading to my big ride of the year, but I can't complain about how Mavic has responded to the issue. They provided excellent customer service.

I had a similar problem with my Avanir's. The only problem was the LBS I bought them at were lazy and worthless. The reason my screw was stripped out was due to the LBS. They installed my cleats and adjusted them and over tighted it cause the threads to get striped, so he put another screw in and proceded to charge me $6 for the screw. I blew it off and went on my way. After several months the screw was not holding so I went back and wanted them to fix it. well they ordered replacement bolt plates, but of course I had to pay $25 to get the replacment plate.

The shoes were fixed and I rode them 2 more times before buying new Specialized shoes. I guess I was jaded. Plus they were really tight on my feet and made my toes go to sleep.

Clearly, Mavic saw it as a design issue. The replacement shoes have a completely different anchor setup -- and SIDI-like red walking pads, too.
