Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Frame! Build starts here!

I have ridden MTB for 20 plus years and have been enlightened to the joy that is road cycling.

I like making stuff...so why not build up my own bike...just won this on the bay.

I will be building wheels as well, this will be a first!

It will be a project over the next few months and I will ask opinions along the way!

Cheers

Having read lots on here and else where Sram Rival should do the trick. My budget is around £1000 and this groupo will fit in with the wheels and finishing gear.

My Allez came with SRAM Apex and I'm slowly upgrading it to Force. Apex is fine and dandy, but I want to outfit my bike to be quite the beast and I think Force would let me achieve that. Red is great, but there's a price difference that I can't quite touch right now, but I've been shopping around for Force pieces and they're slightly more affordable for me.

Ok frame should be here today.

I am begining to have second thoughts about the frame colour. I have been inspired by Performance VW magazine to consider a custom paint job.

These guys seem pretty reasonable...

https://www.windridge.co.uk/content.php/410

So anyone gone down the custom coloour route?

That's a beautiful frame already and the pictures (at least) show it in excellent condition. Why powder coat it with a single plain color? If you're going with something fancy and multiple colors (can you even do that with power coating) then it's probably going to cost a bundle. I would save that process for an older frame in need of a little TLC. You could use the money you save on the frame painting for better wheels or Force components. That frame deserves the best you can spec it with. Just my opinion.

Its arrived!

It looks much better than I thought it would in the flesh. Paint isnt perfect but it is more than acceptable.

The paint stays.

Red black and white is the colour theme.

Force for groupo.

I will post again with my ideas for the rest of the build.

Did you buy that bar and stem yet? I'm think of buying that too. Need to see it in person tho (need to get my arse to the LBS).

I have had a go with it on a Cervelo test bike kitted out with Force aswell it is nicely finished and good value. The bars are comfortable with a good shape. Im 6'2" and have reasonably big hands, a 44 was a good size. The bar has a good groove to run cables in from the bifters. I am after the best group set and wheels within my budget so carbon stuff is out. The black and white also goes with my scheme.

The frame is from 2004. It was amongst the last made in Denmark before the company ran into troubles the next year with there move to the Far East.

A bit like the CAAD 09/10 debate this was the last of the hand made in Denmark frames probably another reason why I shouldnt have the frame stripped and repainted.

There was a clue in the lastpost...a stem lying around.

The research project for the bike threw up an alternate seat post and stem.

On the frame...

So what do you think, opinions greatfully received.

I love Thomson posts, but think their setback post is really ugly. Assuming the fit is fine and you don't need setback, I'd use the Syntace stuff.

My preference is for the 3T bits, but most importantly go with what fits the best.

You are making very difficult choices. Those components rock. Is that Syntace seatpost some sort of composite material?

you went from a short stem to a long stem and a setback post to a no-setback post. do you have any idea of what fit you need?

Roughly

The distance between the seat and bars stays about the same with the alternate set ups. Im just moved to and fro.

I am aware that Im going to get more flexible the more I ride so having options to stretch out a bit is part of the plan.

I have had to make a deal with her in doors re funding groupo and wheels.

I have to come up with half of it around £500 from the sale of excess stuff the other half will then be able to be drawn from central funding!

Off to ebay for the old phone and some of the surplus golf gear etc etc!

Groupo is still going to be Force...I have no experience with road bike stuff so for the money it seems to be a good bet.

I am doing somthing a bit different with regards the wheels...In my bike stuff imersion I have found these hubs...

Your fit will tell you if you want the syntace or the thompson seatpost. I use a zero setback seatpost, but the majority of people now use setback seatposts.
