Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Rides/Exercise - October 8/9/10/11

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians!!

I'm thinking about making pumpkin pie in celebration sometime this weekend. A coworker got me a can of pumpkin pie mix at a specialty shop. Here in Australia pumpkin is a vegetable ... like carrots or parsnips or squash ... it is not a fruit, not a dessert food item. Many Australians have never had pumpkin pie ... but then, I'd never had pumpkin soup before I came here.

So ... it's a long weekend for some here. Lucky you! Whether you've got a long weekend or not, are you planning some good rides over the weekend?

Friday - 24 km ride up a road I haven't ridden before on the tandem. Good ride, just a wee bit chilly out there this evening.

Saturday - Rowan and I planned a 100 km route starting from the next town over. We had ridden this particular route before in one direction several months ago, and found it very challenging, so we decided to ride it the other direction this time. The toughest hill on the first direction was definitely easier from the other direction, but the route was still a very hilly, difficult route. I have definitely had a workout today!! But ... I did not walk any of the hills!! I did have to take a few breaks, but there was no walking.

Oh and ... one "rescued" echidna. There was an echidna about to cross a major highway, so Rowan encouraged it to turn around and go back into the ditch.

Photos to follow.

Edit: Just plotted the route on Bikely, and it turns out (according to Bikely) that there was 981 metres of climbing in that 100 km. Not so much, I suppose, but a lot for me.

Oh, started a RUSA Permanent on Friday night at 2000 with two other guys and rode all night to finish up at 0430. There's nothing like riding all night! One of the guys went on to ride the Sea Gull Century afterwards.

Just back from a nice 100Km ride around the local towns-- city, towns, beach, and woods. Took part of the crntury route I took this summer and cut the loop short on the Farmington River Canal Trail.

That sounds like a good ride ... most of the night rides I've done have had a whole lot more cycling before and/or after the night portion. I might be tempted to do something like that, if it came up on our schedule here, just to get some night riding practice in. I used to really enjoy it, but haven't done much of it lately.

I did my first 300k today. Actually got in 192 miles, averaged 16.1 mph (which is pretty good for me) and took 15 hours total. Weather was exceptionally cooperative, and I would likely be hardpressed to repeat that time under other circumstances.

Sunday - Rowan and I did a 51.2 km ride this afternoon out to Lake Eildon. It was a somewhat flatter spin ... a recovery ride after yesterday's hard effort.
