road tires on a trek fx 7.2?
my wife is putting in some longer rides and we were thinking about some skinnier tires. the wheels have Bontrager 750 32-hole alloy rims with a 700x35c tire currently.

Internal rim width (narrowest point) will determine what size you can install.

You need to find out the internal width of the rim first. It might be printed on a sticker somewhere on the rim.
Then look under the section titled "Width Considerations" on this page:

My best guess is those rims are probably going to take 700x28c tires at minimum. Any smaller and the rim will be too wide for the tire. That means the tire bead wont seat in the rim properly, which leads to blowout. 28c tire would probably be a good improvement, as would upping your tire pressure a bit. Just be sure to never inflate to the max PSI listed on the tire. Stay under that, say, at least 10 psi, and you should be fine.

you're right, smallest is 28c. will there be a significant improvement going down to 28c or should we just keep them as they are?

Personally, I would do it. It's going to make a decent difference, especially if you're going from a tire with nobs to slicks.
