Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BMW lies

I was in a doctor's waiting room waiting for a friend to finish his appointment and picked up the only magazine that was remotely recent. It was called "BMW Driver" or something like that, published by BMW themselves. One article was about their efforts to lighten the chassis of their cars and the new technologies they had to develop to do such. One thing they mentioned was using a material that at that point, was only being used by aerospace and race car companies: carbon fiber.

What?

Apparently bikes are now classified as race cars. Or space ships. One of the two.

What gear ratio would it take to launch a Trek 5200 free of the Earth's gravity well? Where's 53-11 when you need him.

That depends on where you start.

I guess the brand management team at a marquee like BMW would rather associate themselves with high zoot, high performance, high speed images painted by a race car (linking BMW Williams in the process) and space ship than a 'lowly" bike that at best trundles along at 30mph, CF bits notwithstanding. Associate up, not down the food chain

She's 140' of carbon - I'd be inclined to throw Mari Char IV into the aerospace grouping...

Are you referring to this article.....
https://www.germancarfans.com/news.cf...001/bmw/1.html

... which includes this paragraph:

Already used today to meet the most extreme requirements

So far carbon-fiber or composite carbon materials have been used mainly for individual components in aerospace and motorsport. Particularly where the material used has to withstand heavy loads whilst keeping weight to a minimum and thus offering supreme stiffness and strength, designers and construction engineers now use carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics to an increasing extent. The monocoque of the WilliamsF1 BMW FW 25 Formula One racing car, for example, is naturally made of this ultra-strong lightweight material.
I believe they call this marketing.

Wait 'til you have to replace a monocoque carbon fiber component on a snobby brand name luxury car, and you'll realize you need the budget of NASA to own and maintain one.

Nope, that wasn't it. They definitely didn't say "mainly" used by aerospace, etc. They most assuredly said "only."

Oh no, a "journalist"... More likely a marketing droid didn't get the facts right. If this is the biggest "lie" that BMW ever told, I would give them the most honest company award.

marketing is the word here... Probably not too many consumer car companies use carbon fibre in their cars.. well, except for trim on the dash boards(audi)

Wow, some people are taking this way too seriously. I found it amusing that BMW was making a big deal about how they're working with this new space-age material that's both light and strong, and how they're so revolutionary in using it in their high performance cars, when in actuality the "lowly" bicycle has used it for years. Maj Taylor and operator are right, it doesn't matter, but then again, a lot of what's talked about in these forums doesn't "matter." I hope y'all never read posts by people who are proud of themselves for reaching a certain goal, because I'm sure it doesn't matter to you, either. I thought some people on the forums might be slightly interested in this, so decided to post it. If you're not one of those people, don't feel compelled to waste the 20 seconds it takes to tell me so.

Perhaps if your subject line didn't malign BMW your posting would not have drawn many of the remarks to which you seem to object.

The Earth's escape velocity is 17500 miles per hour. At a cadence of 90 rpm, I think I can go 17.5 mph in about a 53-20. To go 1000 times faster than this would require a 53000-20 at 90 rpm, or a 53-20 at 90000 rpm. You would have a race car and spaceship at the same time.

Whoops! I used the diameter of the earth instead of the radius. The escape velocity is more like 25000 miles per hour. You're going to have to dig deep and pedal harder.

This has nothing to do with the original post...but...

What is the difference between a BMW and a porcupine?

A BMW has the prick on the inside....

[FONT=Tahoma]I think the editorial boys must be on pot...
BMW does have a racing bike, not that anyone would order it...
but it's called Q8.R

You can go and check it out here - https://www.bmw-online.com/PIKE_e.asp...tive&ref=e&md=

Or you could special order the CF3 in Ferrari..um..Yellow. Though I'd think you'd need to be well connected to snag one of these limited 750 carbon fibre beauties.
