Purchased a new wheel set outside of weight (your own or the wheel) or aero'ness?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Purchased a new wheel set outside of weight (your own or the wheel) or aero'ness?

Hi All,

I was wondering if any of you have purchased a wheelset for a road bike outside of needing to change the wheels because they wore out or broke, or to save grams of weight, or because you are a clydesdale, or are seeking aero advantages?

I'm getting a new Cannondale CAAD10 with Shimano RS10's and don't have faith in the quality including ride quality of the stock wheels. Are these concerns enough to justify purchase of a new set?

And yes, will be using my bike for racing, but not on a worldclass level!!

This sounds like one of those things that you've already made a decision & are just looking for validation.

Everyone knows the only real requirement for a new wheelset is that they look good on your bike...

Here is my suggestion.

The stock wheels are ok. Not great but adequate and they will not be holding you back or making you lose races.

Ride them.

Next year, if you are doing well with racing, you could get a set of fancier "racing" wheels and relegate the stock wheels to training status.

Good advice, thanks all. This is what happens when you place an order for a bike that will take a few weeks to arrive. Too much time spent thinking about what else I can buy/ upgrade instead of riding the actual bike!

If you're "getting" a new bike, why not see if you can work out a wheel upgrade with the bike shop before you take delivery?

Otherwise, ride them for a while and see what your own evaluation reveals.

Yes, I have. I have a set of Mavic CXP 33s. They are good bullet proof wheels but were harsh compared to my Topolino C19 wheels. I broke the Topolinos and because that wheelset is discontinued, the manufacturer offered me a great deal on an upgrade to their new Topolino ATR3.0 wheels. These wheels have a deeper section rim.

The ride quality of the new Topolino wheelset is night and day compared to my Mavics. The ride is amazing and they perform better too; I can climb better with them, they handle better, spin up faster and seem to take less effort to maintain a constant speed.

The Mavics will become a backup set and will eventually go on a back up bike I will some day build.
