Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's your DREAM bike trip?

The recent post about the best place to cycle in the winter got me thinking, what are people's dream bike trips?

I think mine would have to be the Basque country in Northern Spain...

If you're talking about touring, then pretty much any where on earth with mountains, road or offroad.

If you're talking about road biking trips/not tours, I'd love to get a motorcycle, build a rack for the back, and hit every awesome mountain in South America.

Florence Italy is some place I would like to cycle. I went there a few years ago and through it was great. I would love to go back.

for this roadie:

dolomites-the. whole. range.

the multitude of national parks (jasper, banff, yoho, kootenay, waterton et al...9 all day i think) in the canadian rockies near banff/calgary
would rate a close second

the multitude of national parks/monuments/state parks in utah probably my third choice

the pyrenees and alps wouldn't exactly suck either. always been interested in the andes and the volcano/toluca area outside of mexico city too...

tough question!

Dream bicycle trip ... as in a bicycle tour which we have not done yet, but are planning to do in the next few years?

Hmmm ... tough call ....

New Zealand is on the list, of course. And a cross Australia tour (I've already done the east coast). And a tour in the Canadian maritimes (I've cycled in much of the rest of Canada). And the North Sea Route with an extra bit in France to go to some of the places we haven't cycled yet. Japan is lurking on the list too, as are parts of South America.

Canadian Rockies photos I lived right next to them for 5 years recently and cycled there quite frequently.

I can recommend N Spain and the Pyrenees as top cycling destinations.
The North Sea route has its moments but is more of a cultural exploration than epic cycling.

My next tour is hopefully the Lofoten Island of Norway.

I'm actually planning a trip for August beginning in Amsterdam and going to Rome, via the Rhine, Zurich, the Alps and then through Tuscany. It's something I have wanted to do for a long time and it looks like it will finally happen.

Tuscany...nothing crazy or stressful. Something in the 75-100km per day with some stops in villages for food and lodging. My wife would ride a bus or train so she could shop or explore and we'd meet up in the afternoons.
Maybe for our 25th anniversary in 2012.

Riding in and around the European Alps looks quite scenic.

Crossing a whole continent would be my dream. Likely the easiest would be Australia.

I like to think, something more ambitious than that is possible...?.. Don't like humid, swampy areas.. Cuba , tho, might be interesting.? That crosses from the Caribbean to the Atlantic. And lots of rum stops. The cultural exchange there would be interesting.

Next trip is either going to be the Giro, or Belgium.

Ride the Tour of Flanders sportif on Saturday, watch the race on Sunday, next weekend ride the Paris Roubaix sportif Saturday, watch Paris Roubaix Sunday.

Too bad they moved Gent- Wevelgem from midweek

Actually, next trip is going to be Tour of Bahamas, but not exactly a dream trip.

Can I be your Passepartout, Senor Fogg? I'm an excellent bullfighter, acrobat & leadout man.
Those are my dreams too, plus the Etape du Tour.
