Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

GT GTRw Series 4

https://www.performancebike.com/bikes..._1078867_-1___

My LBS has this bike for $599 plus a 15% off sale going on. I want to get my wife a road bike as a surprise and this is the one she really liked at the shop (baby blue). Any thoughts? Any other bikes I should look at in the $500 range? I just got myself a Fuji Newest 3.0 for about $450 and love it. I'd get her a Fuji but I don't want to look like the goofy married couple with matching bikes.

Well, I bought a GTR Series 3 and might be selling it tomorrow, but that being said, I thought very highly of the GT bikes. I think I just kinda goofed on the size I got, so I figured I'd sell it and grab another one now that I've learned a bit more about proper road bike sizing, etc. Judging by the components, the Series 4 is a little "ehh", yet it depends what her uses are for. If she's going to be a light duty rider, sure that should do the trick. But if she's going to get into it as serious as you, perhaps bumping up to the Series 3 with an external bb and Tiagra components (except front der being Sora) may be worth it. Never know... 2010's are getting cheaper. Just my 2 cents.

I had a Mercier Elle from bikes direct and was very happy with it. It was a nice WSD bike.

I honestly don't think she's going to be into it as much as me so I'm hesitant to drop a bunch of $$$ on it. I'm really considering giving her my bike and buying a 04 Specialized Roubiax for $500 that a guy I know has for sale that's literally been sitting in his garage in mint condition for 5 years.

First off, just go with whichever she likes the most and fits... especially if this will be the first time she's riding. You may want to consider saving some dough for a nice saddle. I know women can have some issues with non women saddles.

However, you said you wanted this to be a surprise. Maybe you can take her to the bike shop and show her the bikes you're considering.

Between the Fuji and GT, they're both very similar bikes with similar entry level components. I'd recommend researching a bit on how to adjust limit screws and set the cable tension correctly. While, 2300 and Sora are cheap, low level components, they work great when tuned properly.

I don't know anything about tuning, but I will probably buy whatever bike at the local Performance Bike store. I assume they know how to tune proprely, and all their bikes come with lifetime tune-ups. The Shimano set up I have is just fine for me and will be for her. I've done a lot of research and pretty much all the entry level road bikes from Fuji, GT, Mercier, Windsor, Dawes, Trek...have the same base line Shimano components.
