Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Threaded or Threadless Fork??

I am replacing the fork on my Cannondale CAD2. It has a 1'' steel fork with quill stem. I have seen the option for a threaded 1'' or threadless 1'' replacement and am not sure which to get. Any recommendations?

Your current fork and headset are threaded. A threadless fork would require a new headset and stem at the least.

I agree with nerull; to use your current stem & headset you will need to stick with a threaded fork. You also need to find a replacement that has steerer tube that matches your existing fork's.

Well the plan is to eventually upgrade to separate stem system (instead of the quill) with a new set of handlebars so the threadless would be the way I want to go then right?

I wouldn't consider a 1" threaded fork to 1" threadless much of an upgrade. If I were in your shoes I'd replace the fork with another threaded one.

If you really hate the quill stem you can get an adapter that will work with the threadless stems.

I think I'd just keep riding your bike as-is, unless the fork is broke, then replace it with the 1" fork they have at jensonusa.com for $21.60 (assuming it fits, it has a pretty long steerer, dunno how far the threading goes).

You won't be able to bring your new fork/HS/stem with you to any new bikes without kludgy shims.

If you dislike your fork and stem that much, the cost for nicer replacements can go quite a ways towards the purchase of a new bike with the stuff you like on it.

Did you look at his bike spec in the sig line? I'm guessing he already has the stuff the he likes, short of the fork/bars/etsc.

The 1" steer tube is the big limiter in having an "updated" road bike.

if you want to save weight, get a threadless fork, stem, headset (i assume you are going from a steel fork to a carbon fork). if you want to save money, scour ebay for a used 1" threaded fork.

Nope. Tough call on what to go with. I'd still probably just run original equip. fork and stem if the stem's the right length. Still plenty of good 26mm bars out there. I'm pretty happy with my quill stem bikes. I like the threadless action, too.

I think it's mostly a question of aesthetics and desired parts availability at this point. I know I'd NEVER put threadless on my Pinarello, won't look so bad on a C'dale however.

Oooh, never thought of the weight weenie angle, good point tFUnK.
