Waiting at the start gate of a race, what would you do if someone cut in line?
You're part of a mass start with over 400 other riders in your group, and arrived early to wait near the front of the staging area, just behind the first wave of elite riders. It's pretty cold out, but you want to have a great race and not get too snarled up in the traffic jams that will happen a little further along in the course, where there are some bottlenecks... an inevitability with so many riders funnelling onto the course. You brought your 'cross bike, which is the weapon of choice for this race; it's mostly on dirt roads, and starts with a fast-paced uphill sprint. Most other people in this wave are on mountain bikes. Finding some drafting partners is going to be key to posting a great time. Some people here are trying to finish fast enough to qualify to ride with the elite racers in next year's race, to get a personal best on the course, or even just to finish. No matter what, the next few hours will challenge everyone.
You notice that a girl has worked her way through the crowd of racers and positioned herself a little bit in front of you, off to the side. She looks fast, and has a nice 'cross bike. What do you do? Are you annoyed that she cut in line even though you've been waiting patiently?

I don't race so that shows how serious I am.
It would definitely bother me enough to make a post about it on BF though...

Where is the "get her number after she drops you (or you let her drop you)" option?

so this is more of a question for a cyclocross and.or racing forum than the road nonracing forum, really.

In a real race (with the exception of some real fast crits where starting point is so important) I don't really care where I start I simply leap frog up.
In this type of event (i.e. 400 riders) does it really matter - work your way through and quit crying that some girl is in front of you. I have stood at the front 1/3 many times and had people cut in front - I don't care as I'm not going to see you long. With 400 riders in a mass start you have bigger things to worry about than the odd person cutting in front of you.
If you felt that strong about it you should have pushed her into the ditch to prove your manhood...

Don't enter a running race because that's why half the people do - try to get to the front before the start.

I wonder what the OP's average speed would be on this race...
is he riding a high end bike that would make him a better rider?
Maybe he should have splashed water on the person who cut in line...this is after all one of those things that invokes a "we're going to yell at you" situation. Nobody should be cutting in line when a hammerfest is about to happen.
But really, i would have given this line jumper the look that says "prepare to get dropped".
With 400 other riders, a base layer is must...

At the Poor College Kid's Road Race, the officials kept telling people to stay on the shoulder to let traffic by, then more racers would roll up to the line. The officials came by and threatened to DQ anybody on the pavement the next time they came by. More racers rolled by and took a front seat at the line. No penalties. The race started with the pack riding knuckle to knuckle, unable to pass each other.
I suppose I would blame the officials for making rules and not enforcing them, but the pack got blown up on the first climb anyway.

There's nothing bad about following a girl with a nice butt. In the few citizen races I have been in, that 's where I try to position myself. They always drop me in the first few miles but the views were nice while they lasted.
