Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am waiting on their Titanium SRAM Apex bike, supposedly it's coming soon and it has to be cheaper than the $1600 rival one. I'm guessing $1300. $700 of that is SRAM Apex. Practically a free titanium frame. :O

Once you remove all the spacers and cut the fork down I think it would look pretty nice. Might be a nice century bike? Take a look at the head tube angle though, very steep.

I know everyone complains about bikesdirect but sheesh I'd like to know how Mike can offer these prices on this stuff. I'd have to double check but I think retail on the group and the wheels alone is more than the price of the bike.

That's a smooth looking bike. I don't ride retro a whole lot anymore but skinny tubes and lugs still look "right" to my eyes.

Does need the fork cut down some and I'd have picked a different color.

Perhaps some aluminum Campy Centaur?

People on the fixed gear forum are talking like this is the hottest thing ever (the ultegra version of the same bike, anyway). You could easily sell the frameset for $300, possibly more. What you are left with is a Red Group and Ksyrium elite wheelset and a few other spare parts for $1700. I wouldn't want the Ksyiums, so I'd sell those to, and the other components, and probably end up with a Red Group for around $1000.

You could do the same thing with the Ultegra version and end up with a complete Ultegra group for $500.

Edit: too bad the frame doesn't have horizontal dropouts....you could probably sell it as a "fixie conversion candidate" for a lot more that you could sell it as a generic lugged road frame.

It''s beyond that. Most of the major manufacturers outsource manufacturing. No R&D, no design, low customer service levels, no dealers to support, shill based marketing. It all adds up.

I like this one. If they shipped this far I'd have one.

If BD or any company offering a retro lugged steel frame bike really wants to be true to the time period, they would offer it in sizes up to a 27" frame (68.5 cm). If you're going to take me back to a time period, then take me back all the way to when bikes fit me off the rack.

These bikes top out at 61 cm. Not even close to today's standard of a large production frame - 64 cm.

You could always replace the cheap bar/stem/seatpost with the Ritchey classic looking silver finish stuff, stick on some tires with gum sidewalls (torelli or champion or the like), and the vintage seat of your choice, trade the wheels for open pros (and put cash in your pocket) and you'd be pretty close. It'd look more like most of the bikes in the retro bike with modern sti thread.

I'm sure you can call or e-mail BD and get a prompt and accurate response to that question.

I recently heard "Masi is such a Rip-Off!" so does that mean the BD bike is not a rip-off?

Looks like crap IMO, especially the black stem and seatpost. The color of the paint just looks bad, the bike as a whole looks cheap IMO.

The orange ultegra one looks a LOT better though.
