Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

El Tour De Tucson

Finished the ride today! 109.7 miles in 5:39 for an average of 19mph. I was very happy with the time, however, I averaged 20.1 through the first 85 miles. The last 14 was directly into the wind with gust up to 40mph. The last 9 of it was absolutely brutal. Glad to be done, now its time for a beer.

Anyone else ride the Tour today?

Congrats! I know a lot of guys that were down in Tucson today for the ride, and sounds like a lot of good results from them. I rode today, and the wind was terrible up here in Phoenix as well, bummer it was down there too!

Sucks dude! That's one of the the things I hate about training high mileage, I always seem to get sick. I've gotten lucky this fall somehow. Get better soon!

I too had to pull out due to physical problems. I volunteered at the Tempe Ironman Triathlon instead.

El Tour gains about 3,500 feet, maybe a little bit more.

I couldn't ride this year due to financial constraints, but I thoroughly enjoy it every time I do go.

The total elevation gain and loss (same start and finish line) was 4,209ft (according to my buddies Garmin). No terribly tough hills, just some in the later stages (70mi or so). If you take away the wind today, it was great. I managed to find several groups throughout the ride to jump in and work with. I was amazed how much the wind took out of me on the home stretch. Hopefully next year it will be nice and calm (like it was here yesterday).

YES! Finally. And he wasn't working with a team like the riders from Hermosillo! Just as impressive was the first female rider, Erica Allar, who finished just 2 min behind the male winner.

I rode it in 5:22. First century ever for me! And the wind, wow! Coming down the last ten miles on the frontage road was epic with small dust storms and huge gusts. Great times!

I managed 6:28 with my 10 year old daughter on our tandem. Could have done without the winds. A great event and next year we will be back with stronger legs and on the look out for the 20mph BF train.
