What's the difference in BB ?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's the difference in BB ?

Okay so I have been comparing some bikes and I'm confused about the number in BB's.

CAAD 10 BB30

Trek Madone BB90

Gary Fisher Ion Pro BB86

What is the difference ? Is it just width ?

More width more power ?

I don't think they are the same measurements. As I understand it, the BB30 is a diameter measurement of the BB. The trek BB90 refers to the width of the BB. It still uses the "standard" BB diameter of 24 or something mm. Anyway, that's my limited understanding.

Ah I see. Sounds like a gimmick to trick people. Thanks

Lemme see what the guys at Trek said about this...

BB30 is overrated, yet everyone followed. We at Trek couldn't just sit there and agree, so we came up with our own BB design and came up with BB90. The results? It's a better, stiffer, and wider design and the critics seem to agree!

Honestly? I didn't really understand all that technical stuff. All I wanted was a road bike that I will enjoy for fitness and leisure. Didn't care if it had a 30 or a 90. The Infinito packs a 30 and Madone with their proprietary 90... And quite frankly, I couldn't tell the differences. I pounded and both went! Up, down, and flats...

Some of it is probably marketing, but there might be some science to it as well. Found this short explanation.

the biggest difference is that bb30 requires a special crank spindle. bb86 and bb90 use the same crank spindles as the old screw-in external BB.

Can someone explain the difference between:

BB30
Press Fit 30?

I thought all BB30 cranks used press-fit bearings, but apparently, there is a difference. If someone can provide more information on this, I would appreciate it.

Lighter by over 100g (130g for SRAM Red, 145g for Force) per crankset+bb assembly...sounds way overrated Trek.

Press Fit 30 vs. BB30: apparently press fit 30 requires less precise machining
