Galvanic corrosion. Basically, the interface between the carbon fiber (the actual fiber, not the bulk material) and bare aluminum becomes a little battery when you add a bit of electrolyte (water with dissolved salts of some sort or another) and eats away at the aluminum side. Here's an old thread on the subject.
That's definitely "must know" information.

DannoXYZ, in post 7 in that thread, mentions the gel coat on carbon that should protect against carbon-Al galvanic corrosion. Hopefully it works that way in the real world, too.

OTOH, my carbon bike, which I've owned for over 4 years and have crashed twice, is still perfectly -- or at least acceptably -- intact.

I crashed a year ago turning too sharply, and bent the rear triangle on an aluminum frame. I ride my carbon bike ... differently. It's not that I'm more conservative, but I try to take fewer risks on it. Any material can be destroyed if you abuse it right.

Yes. When we designed the original Trek carbon fiber frame (the one that used round tubes bonded to aluminum lugs) we used a fiberglass sleeve between the carbon tube and aluminum lug to prevent electrolytic degradation of the joint.

Has coddling tendencies.
30,000 +miles on this full carbon fiber custom tandem bicycle . . . . . . including Easton c/f handlebars, front and rear; c/f cranks; c/f fork . . .
Have BROKEN 2 steel tandem frames and and one steel tandem fork . . .
So you still ride steel**********
Anything can wear or break eventually.
