Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Galvanic corrosion. Basically, the interface between the carbon fiber (the actual fiber, not the bulk material) and bare aluminum becomes a little battery when you add a bit of electrolyte (water with dissolved salts of some sort or another) and eats away at the aluminum side. Here's an old thread on the subject.

Thanks.

That's definitely "must know" information.

The rider with the corroded aluminum bars had said the same thing, too. He also figured that salt from sweat helped accelerate the process.

DannoXYZ, in post 7 in that thread, mentions the gel coat on carbon that should protect against carbon-Al galvanic corrosion. Hopefully it works that way in the real world, too.

When I was 13 years old I did an intentional crash for an 8mm movie we were shooting, and wound up snapping the steel steerer tube on my 1964 Murray beach cruiser (although in fairness this was way before the term "beach cruiser" even existed; afaik they were simply referred to as "bikes"). Does a staged crash still count as a crash? Okay, then when I was in my 30s the aluminum handlebar of my Trek 750 hybrid (which I used exclusively for commuting & had never crashed, intentionally or otherwise) snapped off right at the stem...the classic JRA self-destruction.

OTOH, my carbon bike, which I've owned for over 4 years and have crashed twice, is still perfectly -- or at least acceptably -- intact.

I crashed a year ago turning too sharply, and bent the rear triangle on an aluminum frame. I ride my carbon bike ... differently. It's not that I'm more conservative, but I try to take fewer risks on it. Any material can be destroyed if you abuse it right.

Ok, edit: Same questions, but just failures from "riding" as it was designed?

In other words, who's had their bikes asplode from just normal riding (not racing, not in a crash, etc...)?
Racing isn't any harder on a bike than non-racing.

Yes. When we designed the original Trek carbon fiber frame (the one that used round tubes bonded to aluminum lugs) we used a fiberglass sleeve between the carbon tube and aluminum lug to prevent electrolytic degradation of the joint.

The actual racing isn't any harder on the bike. As long as you don't crash, it doesn't reall matter. And do I really have to point out that you don't have to race to crash?

I've raced most categories, so I know what racing's like.
