My body reacts to coffee the same way it does to a laxative. The main reason I don't drink it in a group ride setting however is because I don't want to look like the other posers sipping vanilla extremo machiattos del vente latte, I prefer to sit in a corner alone eating GU and taking swigs of Heed.

Here are some references on caffeine and performance - https://www.delicious.com/power.train/caffeine .
For endurance riding I find caffeine not particularly helpful until I'm under the last hour, then I use 0.5 litres of strong coffee containing 100grms of glucose. I only consume real food, comprising low GI carbohydrates, before and during long rides. I regard sports candy as performance poison unless used as a mouthwash in the last 5 minutes.

I can't do a cup of coffee. Not even four ounces from a press pot. Espresso, on the other hand, doesn't dehydrate me nearly as much and I love getting one in my system before (sometimes during or after too) a ride.

From a study that measured caffeine in popular brands:
https://findarticles.com/p/articles/m.../ai_n14939663/
The second phase used 16-ounce cups of Starbucks' Breakfast Blend, a mix of Latin American coffees, purchased on six consecutive days from a single Gainesville store. Results for the six days were, in order: 564 mg., 498 mg., 259 mg., 303 mg., 300 mg., and 307 mg.
If you were buying 20-oz "ventis" on the first of those two days, you would have had over 600mg in a single drink.

I was just reading "The Cyclists Training Bible" by hunter allen and andy coogan. There's this excerpt from the book:
"Most studies show benefits for intense events lasting an hour or longer when 300-600 milligrams of caffeine are consumed forty-five minutes to an hour prior to the start"
But usually I drink coffee 1st thing, and dont start riding for another 2 hrs. Do you think I should just drink more coffee? Or Less coffee?

Might as well just go straight to heroin and stop riding altogether.

On average I have 7-8 shots of espresso in a day...maybe I should cut back on the caffeine some. It doesn't do anything for me.

This.
I normally will have a cup on the way to the meeting spot for my weekend group ride, then the group stops around 35 miles in at a coffee shop (if we stop long enough i will have a cup there). Then 1 - 2 more cups when i get home...

I quit drinking daily caffeine but before a long ride I'll have a Grande to keep the mind a little more alert.
