Coffee before you ride?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I try not to drink any caffeine or coffee before I go biking. I've heard it's not good for you and can also dehydrate you. I've also heard that it can be good, but I'll stick to water and Powerade. I sometimes add 25mg of caffeine in a homemade sports drink I make.

Caffeine doesn't affect me much though.

I also recommend the Aeropress is anyone is looking for a good coffee maker. You can find a new one around $25.

Espresso tastes strong, but really doesn't have that much caffeine. A true 1-once shot has 75-100mg. Most espresso-based drinks have around 150mg compared to the 300mg or more in a 16oz regular drip coffee. 600mg is a lot, but 300 is not so bad.

I started drinking a big cup of coffee about an hour before evening rides (all the bowel stuff has been done for the day). Mainly I did it because I like coffee.

I used to have one of these on my commuter, but I found that I usually didnt take the time to drink along the way.

+1 on the Aeropress. The best cup of coffee short of a good espresso you can make for one person.

I forked out the cash for a Frieling Ultimo French Press a few years ago. Use it daily and absolutely love it.

Using a press does require a nice burr mill grinder though. I've got a KitchenAid one.
